The view out the window of this suite that looked down on the strip in Vegas was memorable for many reasons. Not only could I see the replica Eiffel Tower and large Ferris wheel dominating the dancing fountains, but on the street level I could see the lines of cars and hordes of tourists baking in the ungodly desert heat.

My penthouse suite was massive, well-appointed and, thankfully, air-conditioned. I was used to the trappings of luxury. My childhood hadn’t stopped at a silver spoon, I had the fork and knife as well. Ever since I could talk, I’d been trying to broker deals. An extra ten minutes before bedtime. A second helping of dessert. A kiss under the bleachers.

Then I got old enough to take over the family business, and the deals soon moved into the realm of billion-dollar real estate. Take today’s deal, for example, for a chain of luxe hotels in the Caribbean. I’d just talked the current owner into a hefty discount in exchange for profit sharing on my venture.

I would transform his decaying hotels into eco-friendly oases, attracting the wealthy and famous to a brand that was fast becoming the hottest thing in wellness. LushLex was my current baby, and this chain of hotels would cement our place on the cutting edge. And it would provide an opportunity to continue the diversification of the brand into other luxury wellness products, all of which would be featured at our expensive spas and palatial suites.

I stood, thanking the gentleman for his time and giving him a firm handshake. My assistant, Tony, steered him toward the exit while I stepped out onto the balcony to look down at the lights of Las Vegas, which were just starting to come up as the sun made its exit.

You did it, you got him down to your price point, Tony said admiringly as he returned. I never thought you’d get there.

I shrugged. He can see the way the wind is blowing. His old resorts aren’t going to attract the kind of clients he needs to keep up with maintenance, and my brand stands to make a killing in the next couple years. If anything, he got the better end of the deal with the profit-sharing offer.

Tony chuckled. I’m sure you’ll both come out ahead. And, surprisingly, so will the environment. So, how about I buy a drink for the billionaire with a conscience?

I looked at the clock, contemplating the rest of my evening. My plans had involved responding to some emails before working on some profit projections for the next fiscal year. Looking out over Las Vegas, those plans were no longer appealing.

Sure. Why not? I said. There’s a bar off the lobby. Let’s head downstairs.

Tony followed me out of the suite and to the elevator. You sure I can’t persuade you out of the hotel? There’s a casino down the way with high stakes blackjack and a stage full of the hottest showgirls you’ve ever seen.

How about a drink first, before you try to drag me out on one of your hair-raising adventures? Tony was always finding distractions on our business trips, but I rarely accompanied him. Being
