About this ebook

Kat is a divorced mother of a young son, trying to make ends meet during the pandemic. One day she realizes she is able to access one week into the past through her remote accessed laptop. What starts out as an exciting phenomenon quickly turns scary as she discovers her tragic fate, and she has seven days to prevent it. Is she up for the challenge? This novella is mostly a suspense thriller but with a touch of romance, something Jude always adds to her stories. While it is suitable for most audiences, there is foul language and armed assailants, so not suitable for young children.

    Chapter One

    July 4th

Kat drove to her ex-husband’s house, singing along to the song on the radio. She was determined to have a fun day, despite the city shutting down the annual fireworks display. Grant, her ex, had promised to shoot off his own fireworks and wanted her to drop their son, Max, off early and enjoy it with them. She and Grant were still civil with each other, mostly for Max’s sake, but she couldn’t quite call them friends. Their son had only been five when they divorced, so going back and forth between their two homes every two weeks was old hat now that he was eight. She normally took Max to his father’s on Sunday, but due to the 4th being on Saturday, they were a day early. This would be the first time she’d hung out with Grant since before the divorce, though he’d tried many times over the years. She’d always given one reason or the other, not having it in her to pretend that nothing was wrong. Unable to say no to her son as he pleaded for the family to be together on Independence Day, she hoped it wouldn’t turn out to be a big mistake.

Max started singing along from the back seat, and she began to laugh. He was horribly off key, but she tried to keep singing through the laughter. He was very theatrical, holding one arm out and placing the hand of his other arm on his chest, as if he was singing opera.

    Hey Mom, guess what?

She looked up at the rear view mirror and locked gazes with him, choking on a laugh as it threatened to erupt. What, hon?

There’s going to be a lunar eclipse tonight.

Oh, where did you hear about that?

    YouTube.

He said it as if the video sharing site was the most holy of news sources. She snickered and then nodded. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of those.

They only happen about four times a year. Too bad it’s happening past my bedtime. You think Dad will let me stay up?

Kat shrugged, turning left and then pulling into the driveway. You’ll have to ask him.

Max flung the door open as soon as the car stopped, grabbed his backpack, jumped out and ran up the walkway to the front door. Grant opened it as he reached the porch and waved to her. She hadn’t gotten out of the car yet, and took a deep breath before turning off the ignition and following her son into the house.

Thanks for coming tonight. Grant seemed ready to hug her, but she crossed her arms over her chest and nodded.

No problem. He deserves fireworks after being stuck inside for so many months. Though visiting friends and family was discouraged, it was pointless to bother with masks, since Max went from one house to the other every two weeks. If either of them caught the virus, the other would certainly get it too. They’d promised each other they would be careful and always wear masks when going out. So far so good.

Grant had set up a small buffet on the kitchen table, and he bought her favorite beer. He gave Max a root beer, handed her a beer and then held up his bottle for a toast. "Here’s to a fun
