    Enthraller - robert crudup

It was very cold on the evening of March 23, 2019.  So cold, that Lamar Mathias had been thinking about going home and getting back in his bed, but he knew that idea wouldn’t go far with Kevin.  Most things that Lamar wanted to do Kevin always wanted to do the opposite.  Most of those times meant an Outing.

It was Kevin who told him that he was too strong to be his mother’s whipping post when he was six years old.  As the years progressed, he and Kevin grew powerful in their outings together.  Without Kevin, Lamar knew he would’ve died years ago at his mother’s abusive hands.

Whereas Lamar possessed the handsome quality, Kevin was plain looking.  He was the opposite of everything that was Lamar.  Kevin had dark hair, pockmarked skin, crooked teeth, and was no taller than five feet, eight inches in height.  To Lamar, Kevin had always been the same size.  Now at twenty-seven, each knew that their current physicality would be with them for the rest of their lives.

There were times when Lamar felt so close to Kevin, it pained him to feel such a thing.  Whenever they had conversations, Lamar had to cover his mouth with his hand to prevent people walking by from staring at him as his lips moved. But since the creation of the Bluetooth device, people didn’t stare as much.  He was the only one who could see Kevin.

After Charlotte, what does this bring our Outings to? asked Lamar.

You know the number, Kevin said. Irritation dripped from his words.

Every time that we are about to perform an Outing, you ask me the same question most of the time.  Does it have anything to do with your arithmetic?

No.  I just love to hear your sweet voice, Lamar said. He smiled at the transparent Kevin.

A woman driving a red Corvette car pulled up to the light. She smiled at Lamar.  He returns her smile with a brilliance of handsomeness.

Get rid of her or you’ll blow everything, Kevin said angrily.

    Lamar waves the woman away.

Looking at him as if he’d lost his mind, the woman pulls off with screeching tires.

What have we planned these past few months? Do you remember? Don’t let this one get away from you.  Do you remember that young lady in Denver several years ago?  The one who said she loved you right before you crushed her throat with a twenty pound dumbbell?

Lamar looked at Kevin. There had been times when he wanted to grab Kevin by his face, and smash it, but that was impossible to do. I remember her. What about her? he said, staring hard at Kevin. If I remember correctly, wasn’t she the one that kept screaming?

    Yes.

And the point of this conversation is what? Lamar asked.

Don’t let affection come between our objectives. That is what I am saying.

Lamar was about to continue the conversation when he heard a car with a familiar engine drive up.  He knew that engine because he’d spent the last three months working on it.

Charlotte was an educated, bright, young woman in her early twenties.  She was pretty.  She was a tall woman. On this cold night, she was wearing a mink coat.  Her eyes always appeared sad, as if her whole life had been filled with sorrow and despair.

Lamar, she said, as she pulled up closer to him in the black Trans Am, I’m sorry for making you wait.  Get in.

Lamar walked to the car. He glanced stealthily at Kevin, and then he shook his head.  I can never wait long for you, Charlotte, he said, getting into the car.

Charlotte grasps his hand. Traffic was awful while coming across the bridge.  Are you cold?

Lamar smiled.  No.  The thought of holding you in my arms has kept me warm on cold, lonely nights.

Charlotte laughed as she slowly pulled out into the street.

During their drive, Charlotte did all of the talking.  Lamar sat quietly glancing into the rearview mirror.  He saw Kevin sitting in the back seat. Kevin’s eyes were glaring at him with evil intent.

I know we’ve only known each other for six months, Lamar, but you have made me feel wanted in many ways.  I don’t want to push you away but my...Well, I don’t want you to think that I’m being too forward by what I’m telling you.  It’s... I think I love you.

The laughter coming from the back seat only made things more difficult for Lamar as he tried to understand why Charlotte would say something like that to him.

"Listen to this garbage, Lamar.  Is it your good looks that keep them coming or your conversation? Women. They are unbelievable. If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear she’s known you for years," said Kevin.

How’s work? asked Lamar, wanting to change the subject as he displayed a disgusted look at Kevin.

Work is okay if that bitch Marlene would let me get it done, snapped Charlotte, obviously angered.  She’s my boss, but there comes a time when she has to let me do my job.

Lamar felt a sense of sympathy for her.

You might be helping her and her misery, Lamar, said Kevin, smiling as Lamar gave him a dirty look.

Are you taking me to that new restaurant over by Colibe Lane?  Charlotte asked, glancing at Lamar.

Yes.  Afterward I want us to drive over to Cove’s Bluff. Lamar said.

Feeling romantic, Lamar? commented Charlotte, smiling at him.  You know that place is for ... lovers and horny teenagers.  Which are we?

Horny, loving teenagers, Lamar quickly responded.

    Charlotte exploded with laughter.

This bitch deserves everything she’s going to get tonight, snapped Kevin venomously.  Listening to her, I feel no remorse in regard to killing your mother.

She was your mother too, whispered Lamar.

Excuse me? Charlotte.asked.  I didn’t hear what you said.

No...no it wasn’t anything. I was thinking out loud.  You’re looking really beautiful tonight, baby.

    They continued driving.

An hour later, they entered the restaurant holding hands and laughing.

Sitting at the table, Lamar picked up the menu and looked over the top of it to see Kevin’s transparent body sitting in the chair across from him.

"Nice place, huh?  Ask yourself this, Lamar. How many other men has she brought to this place?  Women are all the same.  They smile at you, talk nice to you, then when they have your heart in their hands, when you’re deeply in love with them; they stab you in the heart with a dull knife.  Don’t forget your mother used to do the same thing to us when she used to bring all of those strange men to our house?  Never once caring how we felt," Kevin remarked.

I remember.  Thank you for reminding me when I’m about to eat, hissed Lamar.

Charlotte, noticing Lamar’s lips moving, stared at him with an expression of perplexity.  Her stare caught Lamar’s attention.  He smiled at her.

I’m sorry, he said.  Did you say something? Lamar asked.

    Yes, Charlotte said.

What would you like as an appetizer?

I would really enjoy you on my plate at the moment, Charlotte.  To sink my teeth into your sweet body while drinking a glass of red wine.

    Charlotte giggled as she blushed.

No.  I think I would have you as dessert.  Tasting you like a dish of chocolate mousse, Lamar said, taking Charlotte’s hand into his own.  He smiles at her.  A woman as titillating as you deserves nothing but wonderful things in her life, and I intend to give you just that.  That being said, you know that I’m trying to start a new business, and trying to find some startup capital is difficult.  There are times when I don’t know what to do.

Charlotte frowns as she squeezes Lamar’s hand affectionately.  "I know you’ve told me that you can’t take my money, but I want you to know that you’re not taking anything from me.

    I—"

I can’t accept it, interjected Lamar quickly shaking his head.  Listen, I’m a man of honor.  I don’t believe in borrowing money from women.  My mother raised me better than that.

Our mother didn’t know squat. That airhead bitch! Kevin snapped.

Lamar, you’re not taking anything from me.  I’m giving it to you, Charlotte pleaded, as she softly stroked Lamar’s hand.

No! I’m adamant about this, Charlotte!  I appreciate your kind gesture, but I can’t, Lamar said.

Taking a deep breath, Charlotte, feeling dejected, reached into her purse that was beside her on the other chair and opened it. She removed a certified check.  I love you, Lamar, and sometimes love will overcome pride.  This is a check for forty-five thousand dollars.  It’s yours.  It’s not a loan or anything like that.  It’s a gift of love. Take it.

Some women are complete fools when it comes to their heart! Kevin said with
