CHAPTER ONE

Wow, it must be at least fifteen inches long.

Gary glanced down at her with a smirk. And it tastes good, too.

Sierra blushed from the insinuation, turning her attention back to the poor fish wriggling on the cutting board. With a quick, trained slice of his filet knife, Gary removed the slab of meat on both sides. Only the head and skeleton remained.

Mortified, she averted her gaze as a nauseating ball settled in the pit of her stomach. She burst out of the fish hut, gasping for air.

A chuckle resounded through the screen door. You’ll get used to the smell of fish guts sooner or later.

Hopefully sooner.

After a few deep breaths, she looked toward the shoreline only a few paces from the fish hut. Shielding her gaze from the afternoon sun, she eyed the surrounding landscape and bay. Customers gathered around the picnic area on the far point of the shore. Children splashed in the water as their parents shared a cold beer. A smile curved her lips when she spotted an elderly couple sitting at the end of the dock, their feet dangling in the water. They looked like they hadn’t a care in the world.
