    CHAPTER ONE: THE SEASHORE

    .

Some people like to splash in the salt water at the ocean while others prefer to splash on the other side of the beach, in the bay where the water is calmer. On this sunny summer day, a dozen beautiful sailboats can be seen cutting through the inlet bay waters. Each boat is manned with young smiling faces. Four white cabin cruisers are anchored here and there. Three have fish poles in the water waiting for excitement to follow from beneath the water. The forth cruiser contains a family of four with a few neighborhood friends who are diving off and swimming about. They all have life vests on for safety. A small electric deck stove is being maned by the Captain who wears his white Navel hat proudly. He flips several hamburgers over on the grill. The kids are having fun splashing each other as mom watches from her beach chair.  Further back, several speed boats are pulling skiers about the bay. One man is inside a large tire tube that’s dragged along for fun behind a double engine party boat. Eight jet skis of differing colors are slicing through the shore line waters.  Another party pontoon boat is loading up by the ramp dock area. Everyone arriving is happy and smiling at one another as they board the vessel. A distant church bell rings nine times, signaling the start of bay and beach fun activities.

A Priest exits the church and watches the morning mail truck arrive to deliver its first postal letters.  The Mail truck stops and waits by the huge mailbox. A stack of mail is handed over to the Priest who waves a blessing towards the drive. The driver salutes and crosses his forehead with his right fingers.  He drives away and the Priest walks back towards the front door of the church.

Looking along the ocean side and sandy beach, there can be seen sixty small seaside stores that sit in a row along the three-foot, raised boardwalk. Many of the summer life guards are in their stands waiting for the morning crowd to arrive. A few are applying tanning oil to their arms, legs and faces. A woman in shorts is pushing a blue baby stroller up to a boardwalk ice cream vendor. She hands her four-year old daughter a vanilla ice cream cone. The girl accidentally drops it onto the deck. An early morning jogger sitting on a nearby bench, rises, walks over and hands the young little angel his own, untouched chocolate cone. The mother thanks him and smile. He orders another cone using hand jesters, holding a dollar bill above his head. Behind this scene, seven teenage roller skaters glide down the smooth center of the wooden walkway. They too are wearing early morning, happy face grins as they coast along in tandem, gliding down the central designated bike lane. Just a few steps behind them, a shop owner dressed in white garments appears by his front glass door. He flips a hanging door sign over which reads, NOW OPEN.  The shop owner smiles, places an alabaster pipe in his mouth, moving back out of sight. Overall, the entire beach, store front area appears alive and joyful this blessed summer morning.

Behind the boardwalk stores are several blocks of private summer homes, most made of cinder block construction and brightly colored with a smooth coat of colored stucco. The back porch of each house faces the ocean. Each has a front driveway and a rear fenced entrance way that is designed to accommodate a nice size boat. The first house on the block has a fancy, well built, kidney shaped, pool in the back yard. Some families love fresh water over salt water, even though they are located close to the beach. This home owner is sitting outside in his blue striped jogging outfit, by a glass top table, reading the morning newspaper. His wife, dressed in a yellow and red polka dot, two-piece bathing suit, brings him a large glass of cold ice tea. He lowers the paper and smiles up at her. She smiles back and heads back towards the kitchen door.

Tall hedges separate each house on this first block. Several rows of large plastic barrels contain a variety of colorful summer flowers protected from high tide, salt water intrusions. In the next yard, the owner is playing fetch the ball with his collie dog.  He tosses the rubber ball and the dog returns it to his hands. The owner then tosses the k-9 a treat which Fido gobbles up promptly. Next thing, the grateful dog is upside on the owner’s chest, licking his smiling face.  The pet owner laughs over and over at his dog's loving affection.

Behind this house a young policeman wearing short pants and shirt, exits his house. He stops in the driveway to inspect his police car. The new vehicle is ready to roll, but only on weekend afternoons. Today Officer Brad Pitney is on boardwalk duty which requires a bicycle loaded with a mini-siren, first aid kit and an attached speaker phone, which to radio to the nearby station house for back up.  He opens
