Susan Alexander

Susan Alexander is a lifelong writer who has worked as a lawyer and law professor. She now focuses primarily on writing. Susan grew up in Chicago, where she attended public schools before going on to earn degrees in political science at Washington University in St Louis (AB with highest honors) and Northwestern University (MA). She then chose to work towards social justice through law at Harvard University and earned a law degree at Harvard Law School. Susan began her legal career as a law clerk to a U.S. district judge in Chicago (Julius J. Hoffman, who famously presided over the "Chicago 7" trial, but who also offered his law clerks valuable experience deciding important legal issues). Susan then garnered a Reginald Heber Smith Fellowship, working as a public interest lawyer for two years: First, at the Chicago Legal Aid Bureau's Appellate and Test Case Division; second, at the National Legal Program on Health Problems of the Poor, located at UCLA Law School. Susan continued her work as a public interest lawyer at the Legal Aid Society of San Diego and the National Institute for Consumer Justice, based at the University of Michigan Law School. While at Michigan, Susan began her teaching career, focusing on teaching law students legal analysis and writing. She later taught poverty law at the University of San Diego School of Law. She moved on to teaching legal analysis and writing for two years at IIt/Chicago-Kent College of Law and a total of four years at Northwestern University School of Law. Susan has served as an arbitrator since 1990 and has worked as an associate and a knowledgeable source on writing at three Chicago law firms. She has also created You Can Write Better, a consulting business that helps practicing lawyers sharpen their writing skills. She is a lifelong writer whose writing has appeared in a wide range of publications, including major newspapers like the San Francisco Chronicle, the Chicago Tribune, and the Chicago Sun-Times, as well as a number of professional journals like the Hastings Law Journal, the Buffalo Law Review, and the Cooley Law Review. Susan's novels, "A Quicker Blood" (2009) and "Jealous Mistress" (2011), have garnered high praise in customer reviews appearing online. Her short story, "Neglect," was a prizewinner in Chicago Lawyer magazine's first annual fiction contest. The protagonist in "Jealous Mistress" is loosely based on Susan, and the novel, a mystery, depicts her life as the mother of two young daughters in a North Shore suburb of Chicago who temporarily leaves her demanding legal career so she can spend more time with her young children. The mystery plot is, of course, total fiction. Susan launched a blog, Susan Just Writes, in 2012 and has added a new post about once a month since 2012. The posts include commentary on the passing scene, travel, politics, movies, books, and an array of other topics. Some recent posts: "A day without a drug commercial"; "Pockets!"; "The last straw(s)"; "High heels are killers"; "Of mice and chocolate"; "They're my blue jeans, and I'll wear them if I want to"; "Down and hot in Paris and London,";"Watching the movie 'Z': A tale of two Hoffmans"; "Let's lobby Congress to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act" Susan's new novel, "Red Diana," is a psychological thriller that explores themes like the desire for revenge, the burden of guilt, the tyranny of unethical lawyers and corrupt judges, the parent-child relationship, the shattering pain of loss, and the many routes survivors take to deal with their loss.

    Chapter 1

This whole thing started over winter break a few years ago. I was 18, in my last year of high school. My sister, Sarah, four years older than me, was home from her final year at Bryn Mawr. When she'd gotten back into town, Sarah and her girlfriend, Cindy, had a messy breakup. It came out that both of them had been cheating on each other, Sarah with someone she met at school, and Cindy with one of their mutual friends named Jessica. Apparently, it was so nasty and ugly that one of them challenged the other to a fight, which was accepted in the heat of the moment. Not wanting undue police attention, it was set for the next day at our house (our parents were out of town on a mini-vacation).  Sarah wanted me to keep an eye out just in case Cindy was planning something, or in case she started losing the fight too bad; this last part was left up to my discretion, and I didn't want to step in unless my sister was really getting fucked up.

The next day around 11, we lit the living room pellet stove. We sat on the couch in silence, Sarah pumping her leg up and down nervously. I didn’t know what to say; It’ll be fine, you’ll beat the shit out of her? I just patted her on the thigh. The doorbell rang and Sarah went to answer it as I went to my hiding place, behind the couch in the darkened next room.

I could just barely see Cindy coming in the front door, which Sarah closed and locked after her. Both women went to the middle of the living room and stripped in silence. We changed in front of each other all the time, and I just took a cursory look at my sister. Sarah takes after mom – tall and thin. She's about 5'8" and I'm already curvier than she is.  She's so thin she's a little scrawny, with the top of her pert A cups was just visible over her beige bra. She had no butt and long, smooth dancer's legs that I knew she prided herself on. Her skin was extra pale this time of year, looking even whiter compared to her purple panties and long chestnut hair.  For the fight, she had tied her hair into a long side braid that ran almost down to her belly button. I guess she's got a pretty cute face, scrunched though it was at the moment in a badly concealed look of nervous worry as she regarded her ex.

Cindy I gave a longer look at as she put down a duffel bag she’d bought over and stripped down to her lacy black underwear. Cindy's shorter but heavier than my sister, about 5'5 and maybe 145 pounds. Cindy's blasian", her skin medium dark even in the dead of winter. She's much curvier than Sarah, with at least C cups and a big butt. Her (dyed) blonde hair was cut into a long layered cut, with the bangs reaching almost down to her big brown eyes. Her round face was much more pretty and womanly than Sarah's cute, girlish mug.  As she slowly folded her clothes, Cindy carried herself like a grown woman while Sarah looked as if she were ready to sing that song about lovely it is to be 17 from Bye Bye Birdie.

After Cindy was done stripping, she walked up to Sarah. We don't have to do this. We can just call it even - she was cut off as Sarah slapped her hard across the face. Cindy looked stunned for a second and then slapped her right back. Before Sarah could strike again, Cindy grabbed my sister's long braid and gave it a hard yank, pulling Sarah sideways. With her free hand, she started repeatedly slapping Sarah's face. My sister had her hands up trying to ward off Cindy's blows, but her head was constantly being wrenched around and she seemed too off balance to catch her ex's hands. Cindy kept slapping her, then lined up Sarah's head and slammed a knee into her face. Sarah was knocked down, lying on her side. Cindy still held on to her long braid, pulling her head slightly up off the rug. I've been training, bitch! Cindy yelled, laying a kick into Sarah's stomach. I gave you a chance! A second hard kick rolled my sister on to her back and Cindy released her hair. You wanted to fight. Get the fuck up, Cindy ordered. She stood with her hands on her hips as my sister got to her feet. Sarah lurched at Cindy, who ducked under her arms and punched her in the stomach. Sarah gasped and covered herself as Cindy socked her in the face. Sarah took a dazed step back holding her hands up in front of her and Cindy came in with a kick between the legs that dropped my sister to her knees.

This was going really badly, but I didn't want to step in yet. Cindy obviously hadn't been lying about training as she was totally dominating my sister, but I hoped she'd get it together
