    Prism Photography - Simon Waldbeck

    The characteristics of a prism

    ––––––––

In order to use a prism as effectively as possible for your photography, you should first consider the effects it has on your images. Basically, a glass prism has two essential optical characteristics, which I would like to explain to you now.

    ––––––––

First of all, I would like to mention that the optical characteristics of a prism depend on the corner angle of the triangle in which the individual sides stand to each other. A glass prism, as it is used for photography, has the shape of an equilateral triangle as its base. This means that the three prism sides are standing in a 60 degree angle to each other. In addition, the material used plays a decisive role in the so-called refractive index. There are also prisms made of plastic. But for photography, almost exclusively glass prisms are used.

    ––––––––

    Dispersion

    ––––––––

Dispersion is the property of a prism to refract light depending on its wavelength. A prism breaks down light into its color spectrum. This means that incoming white light is split up by the prism into rainbow colours. You can observe this very nicely if you simply place your prism in the sun and look at the colours of the light it throws on the ground. In the following schematic illustration you can see how light refracted by a prism
