Rural Houses of Two Stories - With Information on the Architecture of Rural Houses and Cottages - D. H. Jacques

    HOUSES OF TWO STORIES.

    Here the architect

Did not with curio as skill a pile erect

Of carved marble, touch, or porphyry,

But built a house for hospitality.—Carew.

    I.—A GOTHIC COTTAGE.

    Fig. 40.

    PERSPECTIVE VIEW.*

THIS handsome cottage very appropriately commences the chapter and connects it with the preceding; the center being two stories in height, and the wings only a story and a half.

Its two verandas, its fine bay windows, its balcony, its handsome gable, and its grouped chimney stacks, give to this house an expression of simple elegance, combined with all the comfort and convenience that a cottage residence can well afford; and we are much deceived if this design do not prove a favorite among the patrons of our little manual.

    Fig. 41.

    FIRST FLOOR PLAN.

The arrangement of the rooms on the first floor is compact and convenient. The parlor, although not large, is a very handsome apartment, and is conveniently connected with the sitting-room, so that the two can be used en suite
