Boy Zone 2: Motivational Talks for Boys
()
About this ebook
This is the second of a series of three books of motivational talks for boys, “Boy Zone 1”. The book includes thirty short talks, each one begins with a visual aid followed by an illustration and application and a bible passage. Further information and follow up ideas are also provided. The themes and topics of the talks are contemporary for boys in our world today while being based on bible passages from Daniel, Psalms, Mark and Galatians. From hamburgers to chocolate, sports to computers, these punchy, relevant, motivational and inspirational talks are full of appeal for boys. For the leaders preparing and using these talks, there is minimal preparation required and they make a great start to a group gathering. While written specifically for wider group settings, these motivational talks could also be used in family devotions. Originally commissioned by the Boy’s Brigade in New Zealand, with the title "God online in BB", these books have already been widely used and are now fully up-dated and available internationally in ebook formats.

1. The Big Test (Luke 4: 1 – 13)
Visual Aid
Take along a few study things suitable to the level of your boys, a school bag, some pencils… giving the idea at the start of the year of a lot of work, deadlines, tests and assignments ahead.
Introduction
Who is looking forward to the school work you have to do this year? Who thinks they’ll have some hard work to do? Anyone got any assignments or tests coming up yet? How do you feel when you get close to an assignment due date or the night before a test?
Illustration
Tests. Assignments. What a pain. So much hard work. So brain stretching. So tiring. Why do we have them?
It’s a strange thing with tests and assignments. They can tie you up in knots as you get close to the due dates, some people lose sleep, get grumpy, chew their nails, fight with their brothers and sisters… and it’s all because of the stress of a test or assignment! Hardly worth it really…. except when you get a result back and it’s really, really, good. You’ve passed! How do you feel? Looking back it all seems worth it. A goal achieved. A good mark reached. You battled your way through, absolutely slogged at it even when it was the trickiest thing you’d ever done… and you got a pass! Fantastic!!!
Progression
Sometimes it seems life is a bit like an assignment or a test. There are things that happen and we have choices to make. Some of our choices could take us down the wrong path. They’re bad choices. You probably know some of the bad choices you could have made today. Other choices we make take us down a different path. Sometimes we’re not sure why we should make the right choices. They seem so hard to make. They seem to cost too much. We might lose friends, we might make enemies, we might miss out on doing something we really wanted to do, we might feel left out, alone or abandoned. And yet, when we keep on making the right choices – looking back it all seems worth it!
What kinds of things do you have to make right or wrong choices over? How do you go about deciding what path to take or choice to make? How do you know what is right or wrong? How do you feel when your choice takes you in a different direction to your friends?
One of the good things about Jesus, is that he really understands us. He knows what it’s like to have to make choices. He faced tests in his life too. Some of them are written in the bible.
Bible Reading
Finally, the devil took Jesus to Jerusalem and got him to stand on top of the temple. The devil said, If you are God’s Son, jump off. The Scriptures say: ‘God will tell his angels to take care of you. They will catch you in their arms., and you won’t hurt your feet on the stones.’
Jesus answered, The Scriptures also say, ‘Don’t try to test the Lord your God!’
(Luke 4:1-3)
Application
We can make our choices for ourselves. We are our own people. Nobody else can make our choices for us. We have to decide for ourselves. Our parents, our teachers, our boys brigade leaders can offer opinions about what we should choose, but finally it’s up to us. It’s a big responsibility. There are good choices and there are bad choices. There are easy choices and there are hard choices. Sometimes the easy choice is the best one to make, but other times the hard choice is the right one. And when we have to make a hard choice, it’s a real struggle. It’s like the night before a test or just on the due date of an assignment. It can tie us in knots. We can feel sick, tired, grumpy. Sleep might not come easily… but finally, when we make the right choice we know that looking back it was really worth it!!
Prayer
God
It’s seems life is like one long test sometimes.
There are so many hard choices to make.
Sometimes it’s easy to see what the right choice is, but too hard to make it!
