About this ebook

Hi. I’m Tony, a young agent of the Galactic Federation. I tracked a terrorist from the planet Dindon 12 to an office on the planet Vinson 5, where he bought an energy gun from Columbus, the crooked inventor. Columbus told me that gun was a fake, but he also sold a real missile – and helped me to learn its target.

I retired (early) and started a new career as a writer. I wrote short stories and articles. Some were published; some won prizes; some sank without trace.Having heard my stories, two friends suggested I should write for children. I’d never thought of that, although I’d spent my first career communicating with young people – as a Chemistry teacher, and running clubs for badminton, chess, table tennis and hillwalking.I tried writing for young people – and I loved it. It became my main occupation. I sent samples to publishers. One asked to see a complete story. In excitement, I sent it off. Then nothing. After four months, I rang, and was told the manuscript was being considered: I would be notified. Then more nothing. Now, after eight years, I no longer rush to the door when the letter box rattles. But I kept writing the stories because I enjoyed it so much. Until, in late 2013, I learned I could publish my stories and games as e-books. Since then, I’ve been polishing and issuing some of them. I hope everyone enjoys reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them.Check out the series:C: Charades – party game – a new twist to the traditional game.D: Diagags – party game – gags written as plays for two people.M: My Story – novels – classical stories, told by the heroes.O: One-Offs – party game – guess the titles, not quite the classical ones.P: Pop Tales – short stories – inspired by 60s and 70s hit songs.Q: Quote-Outs – word games – can you deduce the missing words?S: Inside Story – novels – a boy’s adventures inside classical stories.T: Troubleshooters – novels – space adventures for young people.

    DO YOU UNDERSTAND?

I stood outside the door of the office of Wellington, the Commander of the Investigators, and said to myself, Tony, keep cool. Don’t let this slimeball wind you up. A few months ago, while I was training as an agent of the Galactic Federation, I warned Wellington two crooks were loose in Federation headquarters. In his usual big-headed way, he ignored me – and that caused trouble – big trouble. (See T03: Escape on Yband 4). Since then, he doesn’t like me – and I don’t like him.

I called, Open. The door slid aside, and I went in.

Wellington was in his command chair, the bottom of the U of seats that face the terminal of Victor the Federation computer. On the settee at his right was a small man with a thin face and a yellow uniform with lots of dark blue ribbons. Standing at each side of the room were five grim-faced men in matching yellow uniforms with less dark blue ribbons.

As I sat on the settee opposite the old man, Wellington told him, This is the agent who will be working on your case.

The guy wrinkled his face at me. Child, how old are you?

Thirteen. Our wrist units would translate that to an age he could understand.

Thirteen! He turned to Wellington. Do you intend to give a mere child a task of such importance?

This child has special gifts. He can tell what others are thinking.

The guy looked at me like a slug he’d found in his salad. Can you?

Not exactly what they’re thinking. Just their feelings. And please don’t tell anybody. I’ve been ordered to keep it secret. And so had Wellington.

Hmm. He said to Wellington. I do hope you know what you are doing. This is a serious matter.

I understand. Perhaps you would explain it to the agent.

Humph! He told me, I am the President of the planet Dindon 12. I erected a statue of myself in the square of our capital city.

    Yes?

Yes. And now my Security Police have heard that someone intends to damage it! He was horrified. And, for that purpose, the villain will obtain a device from another planet.

    What kind of device?

I believe it is something that will cause damage at a distance.

    A gun?

That is for you to find out.

    Thanks a lot!

Wellington gave me a nasty grin. So agent, you will wait in the corridor outside the Dindon 12 transporter and watch for the vandal as he leaves to collect the device.

    For how long?

You will remain there during the hours of daylight on Dindon 12 until I tell you to stop.

Don’t you expect me to eat?

"Find assistance. Someone may relieve you for no
