The Fool's Journey: The Major Arcana
The Major Arcana are 22 cards (starting with 0
) which is an allegory for the human spiritual journey. As the fool moves forward through the cards s(he) learns about themselves by interacting with people, events, and energies which deepens and expands his/her self-awareness. We all move through the fool's journey whether we are engaging in a new job, relationship, or new life situation
0 - The Fool (The Soul - The Child Archetype)
Scenario: An adolescent standing at the precipice seeming oblivious that he is precariously close to the edge of the cliff. There is a little dog at the foot of the fool excited and barking animatedly. The fool is carrying a staff with a bag at the end of it and a white rose in the other hand. It is a clear and beautiful day high in the mountain. A new journey begins.
Symbolism:
The fool is represented by the number0
- The number zero stands outside of the normal numbers, which is significant because this means the fool embodies the human being outside of experience. The fool is ruled by the planet Uranus.
4 natural elements are symbolized: Water in the form of ice on the mountains; Earth in the form of the mountains; Fire in the form of the blazing sun; Air which is symbolized with the deep breath the fool is taking.
The satchel represents all that the fool owns. His burdens are light which allows him to move with relative ease.
White Rose: Symbolizes freedom & purity
Dog: Symbolizes our animal nature
Starbursts images on the clothes: Represents the explosion of ideas and inspiration
Feather on his cap: Pointing to the sun symbolizing enlightenment
Meaning:
Upright
Exciting new beginnings, starting fresh, open, heightened intuition, jumping into the unknown, a new way of looking at things, a new phase of life
Reversed
Naiveté, foolishness, unwise, oblivious, ignorant, blind, overly-trusting, head in the sand mentality,
Fear of the unknown
1 - The Magician (Mercury/The Masculine Archetype)
Scenario: As the fool embarks on his journey he meets the magician, a youthful man standing at a work table. The fool begs the magician to show him a trick and the magician smiles at the pure enthusiasm of the fool. The magician is charmed by the fool's purity and invokes a powerful spell by raising his wand to the air and pointing to the ground with the other hand. A Lemniscate (Infinity symbol) appears over his head. The trick the magician performs has been kept a secret for ages, and if you can tell me then you should be writing this book;) The fool watches with amazement and laments, I wish I could be as powerful as you are.
