At nineteen, Lauren is about to experience her own personal adventure, heading off to an exciting, fulfilling career in healthcare.

Her life plan seems organized and attainable.

But as John Lennon said, Life is what happens when you’re making other plans.

When Lauren attends the rodeo with her grandfather, she is swept into a world she may not be ready for.

Will Lauren find happiness? Or is she doomed to regret her chance meeting with the charismatic bull rider?

    Chapter One

Billy Lands leaned forward intently, eyes fixed on the rodeo grounds as he addressed his granddaughter, Lauren, sitting beside him. The most entertaining clown we studied in rodeo clown school was a man named Rasmussen. His act included singing, dancing, jokes, and pantomimes. He did the moon walk while wearing cleats. He sang his own version of Kid Rock’s ‘All Summer Long.’ He also did some Elvis and even Lady Gaga. Now, he was an inspiration!

Not that far from where they sat, a snorting bull bellowed his rage as a tall, slim, dark and handsome cowboy slid onto the broad back of the black behemoth. He wrapped his gloved hand securely around the rope tied securely around the bull’s chest.

That rider’s one of the best, Billy commented. But he’s come up real fast in the field. Doesn’t have as much experience as half the men out there today. This could get ugly real fast. Better hope those clowns are on their toes.

Watching the show from the stands, nineteen-year-old blonde, green-eyed Lauren couldn’t take her eyes off what seemed to be an accident about to happen. What drives a man to take his life into his hands like that? she wondered not for the first time.

Those in the stands who took note of the young girl and her grizzled old grandfather could have easily taken her for a cheerleader or a rodeo groupie. In reality, Lauren had absolutely no interest in rodeos. Given that she had grown up in ranch country in the small Texas town of Edwin, this always came as a surprise. Lauren’s grandfather, Billy Lands, was particularly puzzled by Lauren’s lack of interest.

At seventy-seven, Billy had the bowed legs and pronounced limp of an aging rodeo rider. His limp was the result of the accident that had ended his career on the rodeo circuit. Although Lauren had been too little to know much about the incident, her mother had told her that Billy had been a rodeo clown. A bull had attacked his barrel before anyone could intervene, nearly killing him. Billy had been left with mobility issues and PTSD. Ruth, his daughter, had been left with images of the splintered barrel with her dad inside, being swung wildly from the bull’s horns before riders had swooped in, diverting the angry bull’s attention until they could get Bill’s broken body to safety.

Regardless of Billy’s aches and his frequent nightmares, he longed to be back on the circuit. So, he’d hang around the action whenever the rodeo was within driving distance. Today was Lauren’s turn to accompany Billy and see that he didn’t get into trouble. The family tried to pass off their presence as having an interest in what had been a lifelong compulsion for Billy. They all knew he didn’t buy it, but they kept up the façade though they shared none of his enthusiasm for the sport.

Watching the chute intently, Billy leaned over to point some things out to Lauren. Bull riding is easily the most dangerous and most popular event on the circuit, he told her. See that bull?

Lauren’s eyes were less on the bull than they were on the slim rider dressed all in blue. He looked older than most of the kids Lauren’s age who hung out at rodeos. She wondered idly why he would choose the rodeo life at what she figured was about thirty. Most rodeo riders were thinking about hanging up their saddles and changing careers by then—if injuries hadn’t already forced them out.

That’s Black Bart, Billy continued, pointing a gnarled finger. He’s a five-year-old weighing at least a ton. That braided rope wrapped around the rider’s hand is attached just behind Bart’s shoulders. It’s looped around his hand and threaded through itself. It’s all he’s got to hold on to so it’s got to be tight enough for a hand hold yet quickly loosened when he needs to dismount or he gets thrown off. See how close he sits to the rope? He uses his balance and the strength in his legs to hopefully stay atop that monster for eight seconds.

It doesn’t sound like long, Lauren commented.

When you’re on that bull or you’re in the barrel, Billy noted, eight seconds seems like forever.

Knowing that her grandfather was remembering his accident, Lauren watched as the rider lowered his eyes to study the snorting, bucking, lathered black beast beneath him and then nodded to the men who secured the gate to the chute. With his free hand, he gave the wave, signaling he was ready for the chute to open. It was show time. She held her breath.

Lauren watched with a strange sense of fascination and dread as the chute opened with a sharp click. The bull bolted out the opening and into the ring, immediately bucking and twisting and turning and pounding the ground with a bone-shattering, tooth-chattering jar. The rider seemed fastened to his mount only by the hand that held the bull rope. All other parts of his body were flung to and fro like a leaf in a tornado.

Every bull is unique in its bucking, explained Billy. "A bull may dart to the left, then to the right, then rear back. Some spin in a continuous circle in one spot in the arena. Others add jumps or kicks to their spins. A few might jump and kick in a straight line or move side to side while bucking. Black
