ANCIENT GREECE

The country of Greece is surrounded on three sides by sea. It is made up of a mainland part and many islands. Greece is a modern nation and a popular tourist destination. However, 2,500 years ago, it was the center of a civilization whose influence is still felt today.

The first people to live in Greece’s mountainous landscape arrived about 40,000 years ago. By about 3000 BCE, they had settled down in farming communities. They had learned how to make tools and weapons out of bronze.

Minoans and Mycenaeans

The Minoan culture began in around 2000 BCE on the largest Greek island, Crete. The Minoans built temples and palaces. They traded with people all over the eastern Mediterranean Sea and
