oday, I feel like I am waking up to a new me. It has been exactly 60 days into summer vacations, and I am oh-so ready to head to my dream world: Parsons. There hasn’t been much going on in my life for the past two months. I feel I took sufficient time off to reconnect with myself and explore my innate design sense. I spent time learning new design skills, listening to motivational lectures to keep me focused and researched a lot of artists to connect with their mindset. I wanted to take my mind off some personal things going on in my life. I even read some books on the rules of design and the language they use in the field. I guess I really needed that, after the entire Eric episode. It’s been tough.

    Layla!

Oh God, I don’t understand what my mom gets out of yelling every morning to wake me up, after I’m awake.

Yes, Antoinette, on my way down!

We moved to first-name basis ever since my dad moved out. You see, it’s easier to live with each other if you’re friends, not a cheating parent. No, my mom didn’t cheat on my dad but he was sure he saw her making eyes at the pizza delivery guy, and the cable guy, and the plumber, and the neighbor (who was a hundred years old!) too… I guess my dad just needed a reason to move out because he would rather be living with a girl younger than his daughter than the woman who put up with his shit for over 20 years of marriage.

I remembered every detail of the night he left us. It was over 2 years ago, and I remembered how cold it was. I guess it just felt colder because of his attitude. He had come back from work, or at least we thought that’s where he went, and packed all his belongings. Antoinette didn’t ask what he was doing because I guess she already knew. I remembered watching him intently, like a child watches a moving object, studying it, absorbing its every move. He never stopped. Antoinette never stopped preparing dinner. After he was done, he came into the kitchen, handed over some papers to her and without uttering a word, stormed out. It was as if we had done something.

Antoinette looked at the papers, put them aside and went back to cooking. She was making mac and cheese because I had specifically requested it. After realizing Antoinette wasn’t going to stop him, I went outside and followed him with my gaze. He casually placed his bags into his car and drove away. It didn’t even seem like something out of the routine. I sat at the front door the whole time, he didn’t even acknowledge my existence. Did he not see me? Did I mean nothing to him? I remembered sitting outside the entire night and falling sick the next morning. I don’t remember Antoinette coming to get me. I guess she knew this was how I would grieve and get over the situation.

Oh well, back to our friends living together scenario; I didn’t really mind calling her Antoinette. I loved calling out her name like a friend who’s probably older than her. That’s how I feel, a little older than her.

It’s probably nothing but I feel like ever since dad left, she kind of crawled back to her teens. She forgets her routine every other day, she forgets to plant her aloe vera plants, the ones she crazed over. She often forgets to call in sick for work when she is literally sick and almost dying in the house! Anyway, I guess Antoinette is the kind of woman you need to put in extra effort with. She is exactly like her name – French, feminine, praiseworthy…

I guess she just has those characteristics in her that make her French; the fairytale of moving to Paris to open her own interior
