Magic
Spell I
It was the fourth day of third grade at Grace Elementary School. Classes had ended a half hour ago and nearly everyone had gone home. A little girl with wispy dark curls was amongst the stragglers left.
Hello. Do you believe in magic?
Bella was daydreaming as usual, and replied without hesitation, Yes, I think magic is wonderful. If I could use magic, I would make sure no one around me would be unhappy.
A chuckle. And how would you do that? Would you cast a happy spell on gloomy people?
Yup, how did you guess?
Bella grinned, turning around from her perch on the railing to look at the strange speaker.
A small, cheeky faced boy grinned back at her. You had such a dumb grin on your face, I figured you were simple minded enough to think that way.
As she gaped dumbfounded at him, he looked up at the sky with a wistful expression on his face and said softly, as if to himself, If only such spells existed.
He then looked at her, his expression changing into a more serious one. Are you happy?
A slight pause. What does it truly mean to be happy?
Bella found that she could not move her gaze from his piercing green eyes. Her tongue felt like it was stuck to the roof of her mouth.
He then shook his head, and his whole expression seemed to change again, and the cheeky faced boy was grinning at her again. Forget what I said.
He turned and walked away, and she could only stare at his retreating back, and his shock of messy black hair. She could have sworn she heard him mutter, Real magic is not that simple.
She kept staring at the same spot for a few moments after he had disappeared from her sight. She clenched her fists.
I am happy. Happiness doesn’t need to be defined, just felt,
she said aloud. She bit her bottom lip. If magic can’t make people happy, what is it good for?
That day, Bella decided to stop daydreaming.
