About this ebook

The humans were united, but only through a force that everyone seemed to believe; The Vergas. The Vergas was a religion that most people participated. Over the years since its creation, it had been led by a select set of the most devoted people. For more than a century after the creation of the religion, people lived in unity, albeit in a dystopian society. Power was concentrated at the top echelon of the Vergas and only those who call the shots had access to wealth and basic amenities. Others lived well below poverty. The society was in a state of despair, there is no government infrastructure, and suffering was evident in the land.

    The Verglasie - Tsung Chu

    PROLOGUE

Arthur lit a candle and placed it on a tray above the fire place. Then he took some incense from a tray and poured in the fireplace before igniting it. It was his nightly ritual as a devoted follower of the Verglasie. He sat in front of the fireplace and savored the scent of the incense. A knock on the door jerked him off his stride. He wondered who could be looking for him at such odd hour of the night and proceeded to the door.

His visitor was a tall, skinny bald man with beards. He was clad in a white t-shirt and blue jean. Arthur was surprised to see him. I wasn’t quite expecting you tonight, Benacer, he said, glancing around as if looking to see if somewhere else was with him.

I know, Benacer replied, I had to come to warn you?

Arthur’s face creased in confusion. Warn me about what?

Benacer scanned around to see if third ears were listening. Satisfied, he whispered to him: May I come in?

Arthur held the door open for him to enter. Then he led him into the living room. The incense from the fireplace was now burning stronger. Benacer took a deep breath and Arthur asked him to sit. Arthur was one of Verglasie’ division leaders and Benacer had been his appointed right hand man for years. All division leaders had a right hand man, however, only Arthur’s was assigned to him by the supreme leader.

You know of the plan too? Arthur asked.

I’m surprised and disappointed that you would consider such a thing without informing me. We have been close for several years now I thought.

You’ll have to forgive me for that. I have no idea who to trust or perhaps I thought it was best kept a secret.

I’m sorry to announce to you that it is no longer a secret. Salazar knows.

    How? Arthur gasped in shock

I’m doing this in good fate, Arthur. Salazar and Shaqueel had a huge argument earlier today. You were fingered, and Salazar is not surprised. I have a gut feeling many heads are going off.

Arthur sighed and poured more incense into the fireplace which was as at this time burning low. The fire glowed again. I can’t appreciate you enough, Benacer.

Benacer stood up and headed to the door. That’s alright. Stay safe. The beginning of the end is near.

    Arthur knew he was right.

    CHAPTER ONE

It was a cold winter evening in the country’s commercial capital. People walked briskly in different directions, some of them holding umbrellas. The environment was rowdy as usual as people struggled to come to terms with the effects of the downpour. The road was bad and the rain had made it worse. Pot holes were filled with muddy waters and cars had a difficult time maneuvering. They honked at each other as
