Her Russian Mafia Captor - Bella Rose

    Prologue

Tanya sat in the chair with her hands bound together. In front of her, her best friend and former roommate sat in the same position with fear in her eyes. Blood running down his head, Vadim Volkov was slumped against the wall next to them.

Is he dead? Alana asked in a small voice.

Craning her neck, Tanya looked at the handsome man critically. Slowly, his chest moved up and down with each breath. No, he’s just knocked out. She swiveled and stared at her friend. Well, now that we’re alone, it looks like we have plenty of time to catch up.

Alana cast her eyes down. Tanya, I’m sorry.

Sorry? Tanya laughed bitterly. You packed a bag and left without warning just days after you came home bruised and bloodied. Did you really think I wasn’t going to go looking for you? We’ve known each other for years, and I would have staked my life that you wouldn’t just leave without at least leaving a note behind.

I know. And if the situation were different, I would have left a note. But Tanya, Vadim’s life was at stake. And I love him. She looked up with pleading eyes. I can never ask for your forgiveness, but tell me that you understand.

Tell me what happened, Tanya said stubbornly. Part of her understood what Alana had gone through, but she wasn’t ready to let her off the hook just yet.

I found out that Vadim was part of the Russian mob, and I left him. You know how I feel about drugs, and he was distributing in the club. He told me that he was trying to get out. You know Danny? Danny’s not really a manager. I mean he is, but he was really working on a credible fake ID for Vadim so he could start a new life. But Stephen, a rival club owner, wanted Vadim’s territory. It’s almost ironic. If he had waited just a few more months, he would have had it. Instead he kidnapped me in hopes of getting Vadim to cooperate. Vadim had evidence that Stephen had killed his own father, and Stephen wanted it. Alana took a deep breath. But Vadim has the police in his pocket. They killed Stephen to rescue me.

The police?’ Tanya rolled her eyes. No wonder they weren’t very helpful when I was looking for you."

Vadim was leaving town. He needed to be gone before his father’s men arrived to clean up the incident. I didn’t have long to decide. God, Tanya, it’s been killing me that I didn’t tell you. But I knew you would understand.

Yeah, Tanya nodded her head. And if I had known what was going on, I would have understood. But I didn’t know. So I went looking for you, and now here we are. About to die.

Alana snorted. You don’t sound nearly as panicked as you should.

I’m not. Tanya took a deep breath. He’s going to save us. He has to. She closed her eyes. She wasn’t wrong about him, was she? There had to be something there. She’d seen it in his eyes. But then, he lied and manipulated like the best of them.

Was she willing to stake her life on him?

Especially after she’d said those things to him and walked away?

And how exactly did you get here? Alana asked softly.

Tanya took a deep breath and launched into her story.

    Chapter One

    One month earlier

He watched her off and on for several days. Her pictures didn’t do her justice. Her long blonde hair fell in waves down her shoulder, and her skin was creamy and smooth. Those blue eyes were always filled with worry, and he felt an odd instinct to hold her and tell her that everything would be okay.

But that wasn’t possible. It wouldn’t be okay. The chances were more likely that he would have to kill her. Because that’s what he did. When the family said jump, he said how high.

And when they said kill, he said how many.

For now, he saw no reason to kill her. And as he drove past her apartment again, he failed to see the other car down the block. There were plenty of cars parked on the road. The parking lot overflowed onto the street, so he didn’t think twice about seeing the same car multiple times.

He didn’t see the person hunched down in the seat with the binoculars.

He didn’t know that they were also following orders. And those orders were to get answers at any cost.

Alana had been gone for three weeks. The police weren’t doing anything. After all, Alana was an adult who had clearly packed a bag before leaving. It was obvious that she had run off with someone. And since Vadim was missing as well, it only stood to reason that the two had run off.

But Tanya couldn’t help but feel like something was wrong. She’d known her best friend for a long time, and Alana wasn’t impulsive. She wasn’t secretive. Tanya had no doubt that Alana was in love with Vadim, but something had happened to make her friend pack a bag and disappear. And it wasn’t just because she wanted a fresh start. Not to mention that her car and his car had both been found in the city. And who left their cars behind unless they didn’t want to be found?

She paced in her living room with the phone up to her ear. Okay, but I don’t think you’re understanding me. Yes, I get that Alana obviously left under her own free will. But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t still something wrong. One of the richest men in the city is also missing. Aren’t you concerned about that?

Ms. Lawson, I understand that you’re concerned about your friend, but unless you have concrete evidence that Alana Jameson is in danger, there really isn’t anything we can do. Moving is not a crime. Now, for your own safety, I implore you to drop this. The officer’s voice on the other end was calm, but there was a hard edge to it.

What do you mean my own safety? If there is nothing to be concerned about, then my safety shouldn’t be an issue, she snapped. What are you not telling me?

I understand that you’re upset, Ms. Lawson. I just don’t want you doing anything that you’ll regret. You’re supposed to go to cooking school next semester, is that correct? Gregson Culinary School is not easy to get into. Take my advice. Focus on you, and you’ll be just fine.

There was a definitive click as he hung up, and she stared at the phone. How the hell does he know about school?

She hung up the phone and bit her bottom lip. With a sigh, she flounced down on the couch and picked up her writing pad. There were several notes doodled on it. For example, she knew every piece of clothing that Alana owned, and when she went through her closet, she realized that her friend had simply picked things at random. There were sweatshirts, T-shirts, jeans, shorts, jackets, and flip-flops missing. Obviously, there was no real destination in mind.

There was one key piece of jewelry missing. Alana would never have left without the small diamond pendant that was her one gift from her mother. She knew that if it was missing, Alana hadn’t planned on coming back. While Alana never wore it and claimed it didn’t mean anything to her, Tanya knew that Alana would keep it until the day she died.

And then there was her behavior during the days leading up to her disappearance. She’d been banged up. Bad. Tanya thought that Vadim had hit her, but Alana said she’d been in a car accident at work. Alana would never have covered up for Vadim if he were hitting her, so Tanya believed that it wasn’t him, but she knew damn well that those injuries hadn’t been sustained in a car accident. Not to mention that Alana hadn’t left the apartment. She’d barely left her room. And the more Tanya asked about it, the angrier Alana got.

What happened to you? she whispered.

She’d checked Alana’s social media accounts religiously. Alana never posted. Her cell phone was still at the apartment, and Tanya had gone through it a million times. There were no texts or emails to explain her actions or behaviors.

    It wasn’t
