El escritor mexicano Yuri Herrera llega por primera vez en 1997, para visitar a unos antiguos amigos, a un país que le parece "obliterado por militares, mala memoria y economistas armados hasta los dientes de Friedman; un país derrotado".
Transcurre el último quinquenio de los noventa y los colores variopintos del consenso; también el revuelo del arresto de Pinochet en Londres y las primeras chispas de Lumaco, el "Chiapas chileno". Las consecuencias de esos episodios le parecen, en su segundo viaje, indicios de un inconsciente político activado con la revuelta estudiantil de 2011.

Es periodista, narradora, crítica cultural y fundadora de Alfonsina, destacada revista feminista de la posdictadura argentina. Entre sus publicaciones, textos polémicos, celebrados e inclasificables, destacan la novela El affair Skeffington (1992), el libro de no-ficción El petiso orejudo (1994), las consagratorias memorias Black out (2016) y Oración. Carta a Vicki y otras elegías políticas (2018). Sus crónicas, ensayos y entrevistas han sido recopilados en A tontas y a locas (2001), El fin del sexo y otras mentiras (2002), Vida de vivos (2005), La comuna de Buenos Aires. Ha recibido la beca Guggenheim para investigar sobre política y sexualidad en las militancias de los años setenta (2002), el Premio Lola Mora (2011) y el Premio Iberoamericano de Narrativa Manuel Rojas (2019), entre otras distinciones y reconocimientos. «Yergue el Ande» comenzó a escribirse en 2010, cuando la autora inicia un viaje de la memoria para revisitar el Chile que precedió a las elecciones de 1970 y aquel de los primeros años de la Unidad Popular. «Esto es Valparaíso, abuela, un cielo que de pronto cae al mar». Yo alzaba a mi abuela diciéndole este verso como broma de cariño a lo bruto. Era fácil de alzar: tenía el tamaño de una muñeca que camina. Luego le deletreaba en la oreja: «Es-to-es-val-pa-ra-í-so-a-bue-la-un-cie-lo-que-de-pron-to-ca-e-al-mar». Ella respondía dándome el pellizco que más duele: el que se da con las uñas del índice y el pulgar clavadas en un mínimo de pellejo. Yo no seguía mi frase. Nunca había escrito poesía, pero al haber anotado en mi libreta de almacén lo que le recitaba a mi abuela, apostaba por un comienzo y, para continuar, no contaba con el trabajo sino con la inspiración. Pero no seguí: la línea quedó sola en mi cuaderno entre notas sentimentales y listas de compras. Sospecho que era un plagio; en todo caso, un relato de viajes en su mínima expresión. Poco antes, había ido a Chile a empezar por abajo el recorrido de Latinoamérica con que los modales de la revolución habían cambiado los planes de vacaciones de tantos. Mi novio era comunista y el Che era su agente de viajes. Yo no me atrevía a decirle que lo acompañaba, pero traduciendo su mapa: donde él leía iniciación militante, yo leía karma; donde él abría el mapa de la costa del Pacífico, yo recordaba la ruta 66 del autoestop beat —entonces, ¿qué era yo?, ¿existencialista pop?—. Él viajaba hacia su conciencia solidaria y su bautismo de realidad; yo, hacia la experiencia interior y el azar de las amistades on the road. Además, nos habíamos separado varias veces. Viajar era recaer. Darse una prórroga con paisajes.
Fuimos hasta Bariloche en la segunda clase de un tren en el que éramos apenas mayores que los egresados de secundaria, quienes, envalentonados por su número, hacían un ruido capaz de tapar el de las ruedas que iban variando sus ritmos de acuerdo con los accidentes del camino —abismos entre nubes, vías estropeadas, estaciones de pueblo fantasma, estaciones regulares— y se paraban de pronto, sin explicaciones del guarda, en páramos que ofrecían el único consuelo de orinar al sereno y estirar las piernas entre desconocidos. Cuando el tren se detenía, yo me sentaba en la puerta del vagón, dejaba caer las piernas sobre las vías y canturreaba en francés «Les feuilles mortes». Mario, mi novio, me miraba con malicia.
