I was very close to both of my parents who were my best friends, and I have lost count of the number of happy times we shared, and all of the creativity and laughter. Like my beloved father Joe, my mother Margaret was so special, and my total inspiration. I would therefore like to dedicate this book to their memory.

    Introduction

    Well god dam it Miriam!

A tall muscular and very handsome man turned to his equally beautiful wife.

I’m supposed to be retired - again!

She gave him a warm smile as her turquoise blue eyes sparkled.

Well they do say that there’s no such thing as a free lunch!

Miriam was referring to their Replicant bodies, which had been gifted to them following their role in the liberation of Earth.

    He hunched his shoulders.

    I suppose not!

They sat looking through the viewing screen, as their pilot Lance Parker, another veteran of the battle, slowed their spacecraft, as they approached Jupiter.

    General, Mrs. Swartz?

It was their signal to return to their seats, as he glided the advanced craft towards the docking bay…

Meanwhile, far out there in a distant galaxy, another couple was also deep in conversation.

    Well, what happens next?

That was a very good question.

    Freya linked arms with Vilgot.

I’m not sure, although I have the feeling that we have not seen the last of the Artificial Intelligence…

    One

The huge circular structure of the Intergalactic Space Station loomed large, silhouetted by the equally massive gas giant. Jupiter’s big red spot floated into sight from behind the glowing metallic walls, peeping out like a giant eye observing the little craft as it glided towards one of the many docking bays.

Bit of a change from the recreational vehicle!

Lance Parker had picked them up, just like last time, as the Swartz’s relaxed by a lake, but there was no presidential arm twisting this time.

    Certainly is!

The General sighed, missing his nomadic lifestyle.

So, still not telling why we have been summoned, or by whom?

    Lance just smiled, cryptically.

    All will be revealed soon…

Inside the Intergalactic Space Station, their ship loomed large on the floating display screen.

I see that the ship has arrived.

Ambassador So’lock paced about on her sinewy green legs, as her purple cloak flowed behind her. She was an insectoid, a Mantid, an advanced race that resembled a preying mantis.

Yes, we have much to discuss, but I am not sure quite how we are going to convey our plan.

Ambassador Lateck bowed his head in agreement, as his semi transparent blue skin glowed in the light that shone down from above. He was an Arcturian, one of the oldest and wisest races in the galaxy.

I think we will have our work cut out to convince them to undertake the mission…

There was the merest vibration, as the Swartz’s craft docked, and they exchanged glances, wondering what lay in store for them.

Lance Parker disengaged from the main computer, leaving his gloves and helmet on his seat, as he gave them another warm smile.

General, Mrs. Swartz, if you would like to follow me.

He gestured towards the awaiting doorway, positioned to their left.

The General was first to rise, offering a supporting hand to his wife, although it was he who needed the support. He had seen and experienced many things whilst being in overall charge at Edwards Air Force Base and since retiring, he had experienced considerably more. The General just felt too old for all of this, despite only looking in his mid twenties. His Replicant body belayed his real age, and although it offered him far more than he had ever thought possible, nothing could make up for all he had been through.

Retirement, a Recreational Vehicle and his wife were all that he had wished for, and yet he was now about to embark on something that only a few short years ago, he would not have thought possible.

Miriam clutched his hand firmly, as she thought of his former Personal Assistant Joan Tutwiler. She had looked after her husband whilst he had been in charge, true and faithful just like a dog, which is why she had been nicknamed The General’s Rottweiler!

They often spoke about Joan, wondering what had happened to her?

The gentle swish of the door was followed by the light from the interconnecting airlock, as they held hands like a pair of newlyweds. They had been together for what seemed like for ever, and now they were going to approach whatever lay in front of them as one.

The door on the other side slid open, as they walked calmly through into the foyer. The Station was one of many facilities of the United Planetary Union, a collective of many species, and the closest thing to an Earth like United Nations.

Lance then moved to the front, speaking to the humanoid receptionist, who looked very Terran apart from her rather pointed ears. The General instantly thought about Spock, the Star Trek character he had grown up with, being an avid childhood fan. Little did he realise that years later he would be meeting a Vulcan!

Well, the man was not actually a Vulcan, but that was beside the point!

After a brief conversation, their pilot guided them towards one of the inner doorways.

The Swartzs gasped as the door opened to reveal an enormous room that appeared to go on for ever. It was almost a mile round, with floor to ceiling windows 70 to 80 feet high.

When there was a meeting, a variety of species occupied its many rooms, which used holographic projections, to provide suitable environments for the discussions to take place.

Physical and mental conversations were possible via a universal translation box, accessed by sonic translation rings worn on the head.

Today however, it looked deserted apart from one small section which looked to be occupied.

Lance led them towards it, explaining that as far as he knew, committees passed rulings that helped greater cooperation
