Chapter 1 : The Ever Changing Global Economy

We are in a world that is constantly changing. One thing that you will realise is that the only constant thing in life is change. Life will change, companies will change, our lifestyles will change. The global economy is constantly changing.

At the time of writing this ebook, the Corona Virus, or Covid – 19 has taken over the world. Whilst the numbers are slowly rising in Australia, the truth of the matter is that people have had to adjust their life styles.

Gatherings of over a 100 people have been banned in many countries including Australia, South Africa just to mention a few. In Australia, what was interesting was that the first ban was no crowds over 500, this was from the 16th of March. What was even more shocking, was that 48 hours later, that was no longer the case, the new ban was 100.

Can you imagine, and yet the previous week people had gone through the week under what one would consider to be a normal week. Yet, here we are, churches having to reconsider their operations, concerts cancelled, conferences cancelled. Musicians who were meant to do tours, that all has been cancelled that’s an entire industry, wipe out in minutes. Billions lost in a few hours from the initial announcement of 500 people.

This is how fast and vulnerable, companies and industries are. It’s the global economy with true global forces. I mention churches from time to time, mainly because whether you realise it or not, churches have power financially and contribute billions into the global economy. When church conferences, take place, you will find that many hotel bookings go through the roof, particularly of those hotels near the venue.

Here is an example. Few years ago, I went to my first ever, Hillsong Conference in Sydney. This was and is usually held in Sydney Olympic, of which you will find a few top end hotels there. I figured, one of the reasons why those hotels are there was to cater for people who were coming to the Olympic Park be it for concerts, conferences etc. You would also expect such hotels to charge a premium too, on the simple basis that they are close to the Olympic Park. Some concerts and events, end at midnight. So, imagine for travelers, the convenience of just walking from the Olympic Park and back to your hotel.

Of course, many locals, don’t mind driving home, or using the train etc. However, that convenience of being close to the ‘’action’’ can translate into dollars for the hotels and accommodation owners. Speaking of accommodation, during the mining boom in Australia. Many people who rented houses near the mines, made a fortune, they were charging way more than main stream Australia was charging. This created what we call a two Tier economy, where prices in Perth, ( WA) were way higher than the rest of Australia. Wages were higher, prices for accommodation etc were higher. We saw FIFO workers, these were workers that Flew In and Flew Out into a city. Some flew in Monday morning and then end of the week, Friday afternoon flew out back to their city of origin to be back with their family.

I’m saying this to just show you, the rapid change that is happening and how a boom today can suddenly change into a nightmare the next day. I just saw a lady who runs birthday parties for kids, basically venting her sadness on Facebook, since the ban on gatherings, basically all her bookings were cancelled as customers wanted to protect their kids from the on going corona virus.
