Obesity epidemic

The Government deserves our gratitude for successfully tackling the Covid-19 pandemic. It listened to the advice of the Ministry of Health and other public health experts and has taken actions to prevent the pandemic from crippling our economy and our health system. It took a range of evidence-based actions that have protected the population from the misery of continued lockdowns, widespread sickness and a large number of deaths. It has protected our hospitals and wider health system from buckling under the number of Covid-19 patients.

This success is in stark contrast to another health issue in which we are one of the global leaders: obesity. Aotearoa has the 22nd-highest obesity rate in the OECD, with statistics continuing to rise – not something we want in the headlines.

Our environment is obesogenic.
