About this ebook

Want to transform your energy quickly in a way that boosts your health? Biocircuits draw your body and mind into deep relaxation and refreshment. Lie on these easy-to-use tools, and your natural energies flow strongly into balance, drawing you into profound states of cellular and neurological repair, realignment and rejuvenation.
Developed in the early 20th Century by L.E. Eeman, Biocircuits are based on a simple but universal principle: when certain of the body's energy centers are linked together, the body's natural energy flow is profoundly enhanced. By harmonizing this flow of life-energy in and around the body, tension and bodily stress are relieved.

As a result, in only 15 to 30 minutes, muscular tension begins to dissolve and the entire body-mind feels calm, peaceful and balanced. So much so that these powerful tools can also be ued to facilitate meditative exploration, personal growth, and inner work of almost any kind. Unlike most treatment processes, the biocircuit puts you, the user, in charge of feeling and transforming your own natural energy.

    What People Are Saying About

    BIOCIRCUITS

THE NATURAL TOOL THAT PROMOTES SLEEP, BOOSTS ENERGY, AND EXPANDS AWARENESS

This book is a fascinating exploration of a whole new way of balancing the energies of the human body. It is a thorough presentation of both theory and personal experience. I have found biocircuits to be very valuable stress-reduction tools and a good adjunct to bodywork.

    —JOSEPH HELLER, Creator of Hellerwork

A well-written eye-opener on the most exciting field in science today—the study of the body’s electrical and quasi-electrical energy. This book offers more than abstract theory. It is an opportunity to experiment and experience results in your exploration of your body’s subtle energy fields.

    —MICHAEL HUTCHISON, Author, MegaBrain

A breakthrough tool for relieving biophysical stress! For a natural, non-medical modality, biocircuits can be remarkably powerful in producing quick, deep relaxation. This book is not just a lively and readable how-to book, it is a definitive introduction of a new subfield in the life-energy sciences.

    — LEE SANNELLA, MD, Psychiatrist, Researcher, and Author, The Kundalini Experience

Biocircuits can correct energy imbalances, sometimes dramatically. For instance, I have seen copper biocircuits actually double the speed at which the Qi flows through the energy meridians.

    — MIKI SHIMA, OMD, CA, President, Japanese-American Acupuncture Foundation, Director, California Acupuncture Association

I like this book very much, and I can corroborate much of what it says. Biocircuits increase the flow of energies through the spine and balance the body’s electropotentials. When you do this, you not only affect the physical body, but also help people mentally and emotionally, sometimes producing results that wouldn’t be available with any other approach.

—JACK SCHWARZ, Author, Voluntary Controls, Human Energy Systems

In my work in somatic psychotherapy, I’ve found biocircuits to be very useful in overcoming the resistance to translation from conceptual understanding to direct biophysical experience.

    — ROBERT K. HALL, MD, Founder and Director, Lomi School, Tomales School of Psychotherapy

This book is the most exciting and stimulating work on holistic health that I have seen in many years. Everybody interested in maximum wellness should read it!

—ROBERT ANTON WILSON, Author, The Cosmic Trigger, The Illuminati Trilogy

Biocircuits really work, and they’re easy and fun to use. In fact, these are the best natural tools I know to balance the total person and deepen consciousness for inner exploration. The Pattens have written the definitive work on an important, and hitherto little-known, technology.

—GREG NEILSEN, Author, Pendulum Power, Pyramid Power

Biocircuits are an idea whose time has finally come. Leslie and Terry Patten have performed a valuable service by bringing to light the important biocircuitry research of Eeman, Lindemann, and others.

—RICHARD GERBER, MD, Author, Vibrational Medicine

"E = MC² has far-reaching personal implications for all of us. Biocircuits explains why. More than that, it shows you how you can benefit from Einstein’s discovery: It introduces a simple, practical way of learning for yourself that your body is energy, and that you can harness that energy to a significant degree for your health and psychic well-being. A most enjoyable and helpful book that should be in all public libraries."

    FOREWORD

    BY LESLIE PATTEN

In the last few months, I’ve had occasional fleeting thoughts of bringing Biocircuits: Amazing New Tools for Energy Health back into circulation with a 2nd edition. Published in 1990 by H.J. Kramer, the book has been out of print for over fifteen years. Despite its general unavailability, I still occasionally receive an appreciative email from a reader who made a biocircuit and thanked me for the information. Remembering those people who took the time to personally reach out spurred me on with this project.

In preparing this re-issue, I went back and re-read through our original research. I had forgotten how difficult it was to find information about L.E. Eeman, the man. By the mid-1980s when Terry and I began our work on the book, many of the people who personally knew Eeman were dead. We were sleuthing by snail mail across continents, corresponding with, among many others, The British Society of Dowsers. Eeman was on their first Council in 1946, elevated to Vice President in the summer of 1953. Yet the Society had no files on Eeman. We even put a quarter page ad in the journal of The Radionic Association in England, hoping for a lead or two.

Information on Leon Eeman wanted—We are working on a book about Leon Ernest Eeman and his relaxation circuit. We are greatly in need of the following information: Personal descriptions; photographs of Eeman his assistant Mary Cameron, and Eeman’s work space at 24 Baker St.; copies of lectures Eeman gave; if he had heirs; whereabouts of his archives and information on his personal life. We particularly want to locate people who knew Eeman while he was alive. Call collect…

We typed a lot of inquiries, gathering dozens of dead ends. It was our good fortune, probably through nagging persistence, to encounter a few people still living that remembered Eeman or Mary Cameron. Others, heirs of those who knew Eeman, gave us tidbits of stories as well as booklets and pamphlets not in print. Slowly, a portrait of Eeman and his work emerged. These gems of correspondence from elderly people in England were written free-hand, many on vellum. I enjoyed looking through those boxes of correspondence; a visit to an era long gone in our fast, internet-heavy, modern world.

Anne Atkinson, a radionic and homeopathic practitioner who used the relaxation circuit with her patients, had the most vivid personal remembrance of Eeman.

Dear Mrs. Patten, I was away from home when your letter arrived, plus the fact that I had to do a lot of remembering! It all happened such a long time ago! I met Eeman in 1948. He fairly frequently attended the monthly meetings of the Radionic Association. Eeman was a tall, well-built man, balding, with a fair complexion, about 200 pounds, and a very pleasant smile. But I don’t actually remember him laughing. He was completely one track—the only thing of real interest was his own work. And his only relationship with anyone was if they could serve his purpose in some way. Mercifully, his motive for his work was to help the suffering, otherwise he would have been cold and self-centered and he was not! He had lovely hands and was scrupulously honest in all his findings.

Eeman’s only surviving relative, his daughter Beryl Eeman, had little to say about her father, collaborating Ms. Atkinson’s observations that he was devoted to his work to an extreme.

Thanks for your interest in my father’s work, but I’m afraid I shall disappoint you in one respect. I don’t think I shall be able to give you much help regarding L.E.E. the man, for to the children in the family he was a very remote figure, intensely concentrated, almost exclusively on his work and related arcane matters (that to us appeared totally or 99% above our heads).

It seems Terry and I had the impulse to write Biocircuits in the nick of time, before the door of time closed on even these fragile recollections.

Since we wrote Biocircuits, interest in the field of energy medicine has blossomed and matured. Instead of a fringe sector of our society, energy work along with natural foods and healthy living has entered the main stream. Therefore, this second edition has few changes from the original. In the first edition, many new terms had quotation marks around them. Most of these words are now in the vernacular. With a 21st century, sophisticated audience, and access to the internet, I removed the majority of those clumsy marks. We’ve changed some of the formatting, attempting to make it cleaner, crisper, and easier to read. And finally, I added the results from a double-blind study done in the mid-1990s, after the book’s initial publication.

Biocircuits are a timeless tool. They can help restore balance, cure insomnia, and are useful for general relaxation. But they can also be a catalyst for unlocking the body and mind’s inner secrets. Make use of the intelligence trance the biocircuits produce however you desire. But above all, have fun and experiment.

    FOREWORD

    BY TERRY PATTEN

I’m delighted that this book is finding its way back into print. Thank you, Leslie, for bringing out this new edition! I’m writing this in 2019, and the original book was published in 1988, so it’s been over 30 years since it first came out!

Looking back now, I feel proud and happy with Biocircuits: Amazing New Tools for Energy Health. On balance, I think it has, in a lasting way, advanced the understanding of the nature of how to correct hyperarousal, and to stimulate parasympathetic releases. I think it also advanced the understanding of the nature and dynamics of the life energy in the human system, and how it can flow, fail to flow, and be restored to its natural flow. And it has provided a blueprint for other researchers who have continued to work with this remarkable body of phenomena. I’m also proud that Julian Isaacs and I were able to conduct the research that proved the robust effects that biocircuits have on the human body.

I am gratified that Biocircuits has continued to find an audience and to be of value to many people, and that people continue to discover and work with these powerful healing tools, even after all these years.

As I remember, the first edition went into two or three printings and ultimately sold over 25,000 copies, but it’s been out of print for at least a decade now.

This book emerged at a poignant and catalytic time in Leslie’s life and in mine. We were still in the Ashram when we wrote most of it, but by the time it appeared in print, we had left the Ashram, Leslie was pregnant with our son Michael, and we had decided to manufacture them and to found our company, Tools for Exploration.

For the next decade I worked mainly to help Tools For Exploration survive, and then to succeed and thrive. It became "the catalog of consciousness technologies and subtle energy tools, ultimately publishing a color catalog of over 100 pages, listing over 1000 separate products. In its day it defined consciousness technology as a new product category, foreshadowing the current burgeoning interest in consciousness hacking." The company slowly grew from our garage and spare room, ultimately supporting a staff of 15 people with annual revenues of over $2.5 million (when that was a lot of money!). In 1998 Leslie and worked together to conclude a successful sale of the company. Alas, the new owners weren’t as knowledgeable about the projects or the community of those interested in them, so the company shrank and barely exists today, but I look back on all of what we did there as good work well done.

In the years since, Leslie and I have both seemingly moved on. Our marriage ended about ten years after we finished the book. But during our years together, Leslie and I shared many joys besides co-authoring this book and co-creating our company. Most of all, we raised a wonderful son. And in all these things, we delighted in the most universal expression of the flow of life energy—the natural world. We traveled to beautiful wild places and hiked most weekends in the beautiful nature of Marin County when we were together. Today, Leslie continues to express that essential goodness as a noted naturalist, blogger, and author of The Wild Excellence and Ghost-walker: Tracking a Mountain Lion’s Soul through Science and Story.

Since my teens, I had felt called to address the unsustainable trajectory of human culture, sensing the deep structural imbalances in human culture and society that are now so widely visible. So, after we sold our company, I focused on helping midwife the emergence of the next stage of human cultural evolution. I extended my lifelong passion for spiritual practice and awakening as a basis for more global sociocultural transformation. I have taught practice to over ten thousand people and advanced the leading edges of philosophy and practice in the integral, evolutionary and metamodern communities.

Over the last twenty years I’ve made many original contributions to integral spiritual practice, enabling it to reconnect with the wisdom of the natural world and indigenous elders, and to extend into transformations of human relating. My book, Integral Life Practice: A 21st Century Blueprint for Physical Health, Emotional Balance, Mental Clarity, and Spiritual Awakening appeared about twenty years after Biocircuits. Most recently, yet another decade on, my magnum opus, A New Republic of the Heart: An Ethos for Revolutionaries has appeared. Now I am focused primarily on helping people awake up to what time it is on the planet, and to convening and serving the new field of social experiments that can bring about the flourishing of a new stage of maturity and cooperation and culture.

Considering Biocircuits thirty years later, one fact stands out: I still use them! From 1989-1998, when I was choosing the products we would feature in the Tools for Exploration catalog, I tried out literally hundreds of subtle energy tools and consciousness technologies. Of all those technologies, there are only two that I continue to use personally: sensory deprivation float tanks and biocircuits. Any time I need to restore my life energy in a time-efficient way, I lie down on a biocircuit. I feel an intensification of energy and tension, and then a release, and then another wave passes through, and then another. Ultimately there’s a great depth of relaxation, the parasympathetic release we documented years ago. About twenty minutes after I lie down on them, I get up off my biocircuits feeling restored and rebalanced. They have stood the test of time!

    BIOCIRCUITS

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

This book has been a great pleasure to write, in part because it engaged us in cooperative relationships with so many people.

First, hearty thanks to Peter Lindemann, whose friendship and influence have played a key role in the writing of this book. In long conversations, he clarified his own work and helped us to refine our understanding of biocircuitry; he also read our manuscript and offered many helpful suggestions.

We are grateful to many friends in England who have helped us over the phone and through the mail: Beryl Eeman, for her assistance in locating publications and photographs of her father; Pat Golby, of the Radionics Society; Michael Rust, of the British Society of Dowsers; Anne Atkinson; Jean Cormack (daughter of Aubrey Westlake); Bruce Copen; Mike Roberts; Leo Corte, of Delawarr Laboratories; T. Watson, M.D.; Annette Inglis; and Vicki Roberts, of The Radionics Quarterly.

In the United States, Michael Maffeo helped us again and again, beginning by providing us with our first copy of Cooperative Healing. Tom Brown, of Borderland Sciences Research Foundation, became our friend and resource, and it was Tom who introduced us to Peter Lindemann. During the earliest phase of our research, his predecessor, Riley Crabb (who kept Eeman’s work alive in the United States for thirty years) gave us trans-Pacific research advice from New Zealand. We are grateful to those whose professional contributions helped us significantly: George Fritz, Ph.D.; Greg Neilsen; Thomas Hirsch; Kathleen Hirsch, C.A.; and Phil Thomas, who educated us about Edgar Cayce’s work. Frank Aguirre; Richard Gerber, M.D.; Miki Shima, C.A.; Ray Himmel, C.A.; Steven Birch, of the New England School of Acupuncture; Steve Claydon; and Bob Nelson of Rex Research contributed time and energy to our research efforts, for which we are appreciative. Several personal friends, including Michael Setter, Richard Brown, Kathleen Lynch, James Steinberg, Tom Remus, David Rosen, Hal Okun, and Frank Marrero, freely gave us useful assistance, feedback, and support.

We are particularly grateful to Hal and Linda Kramer for their enthusiasm, professionalism and humor, and for bringing in Greg Armstrong and Suzanne Lipsett to edit this manuscript as only they could do.

We have saved for last our acknowledgment of our long-time spiritual teacher, Da Free John, to whom we are especially grateful. Da Free John first introduced us to biocircuits. Both personally and through his writings, he helped us understand the relationships between the I and the body, between the body and energy, and between energy and consciousness. With him we experienced these things directly in a way words cannot describe. Without that unique education, we would not have been able to write this book.

    A NOTE ABOUT ME

Since this book is coauthored by two people, Leslie and Terry Patten, but written in the first-person singular, the question naturally arises: who speaks through its pages?

Let us describe our collaboration: Leslie began researching and writing this book in the fall of 1986. In mid- 1987, Terry began writing the theoretical sections and polishing the text. Over the next year both of us lay in circuit many times, contacted various people for research purposes, rethought our ideas about biocircuits, talked, and reworked the manuscript again and again. We agreed, disagreed, and ultimately agreed. So this book is the work of a marriage partnership, utterly different from and greater than what either of us would have done without the other. It has been a
