About this ebook

Richard Hattatt's collection of brooches ranges from the Iron Age to the Middle Ages, though most were Roman and Romano-British. Between 1982 and 1989 he wrote four books illustrating all the brooches, and in the fourth book he included a visual catalogue which provides a quick guide to the types and dates. it is this visual index - with drawings of all 2000 brooches - that is reproduced.

    Richard Hattatt

Richard Hattatt had a lifelong interest in archaeology, and when he retired from his family firm he devoted himself to the study and collection of antiquities. These ranged from flints and pottery collected locally near to his home in the New Forest and in Wiltshire and Dorset to Greek vases from the Mediterranean, but his interest soon focused on brooches, and he rapidly built up an important collection. The lack of easily obtainable reference books prompted him to write his own. His first book was published in 1982, and, as his collection grew, further books appeared in 1985, 1987 and 1989. Each brooch is described in detail and illustrated with a meticulous drawing, and there are lots of additional notes on comparable types.

Richard Hattatt died in 1992. He had already deposited parts of his collection in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and in the Devizes Museum, and sold other parts at auction and privately; so his collection is now dispersed. But his four books remain – a record of the collection and an endless source of reference and interest for those who follow him. The ‘Visual Catalogue’ reprinted here was a last-minute addition to his fourth book; he prepared it originally for his own use, and realising how often he used it, he decided to include it the book.

    Richard Hattatt's four books are:

    Ancient and Romano-British Brooches (1982)

Iron Age and Roman Brooches (1985)

    Brooches of Antiquity (1987)

Ancient Brooches and Other Artefacts (1989)

    Visual Catalogue of Brooches

This ‘visual catalogue’ was prepared by Richard Hattatt to aid the identification of brooches and for speedy reference to the drawings in his four books. It is
