Traveling along the edge of the Universe
Chapter one
Why not?
Tina was proud of her purchase. She considered the document on purchase of seemingly useless little planet Pluto. Scientists have long erased it from the list of planets. It really upset the current owner. But now, the entire planet is mine,
she thought proudly. Her gaze was turned to the night sky. There, among the distant stars, its orbit is spinning a small ball - Pluto. People bought land on Mars and on the moon, but Tina decided not to limit herself to a small plot of land. She believed that the unremarkable planet will bring her profit. Why do you need Pluto?
Tina's friends laughed. On it there is nothing. Only an ice and a stone.
But Tina just smiled in response. Stones, after all, are different: gold, brilliants, diamonds. From stones can be extract different metals. No one, after all, not landed on Pluto, and no one knows what is really,
with a shrug, she thought. She again looked at the starry sky and returned to the house.
The next day, Tina went to NASA. Nobody was glad her appearance. Girl was sitting in the office in front of the director.
It's impossible.
The refusal was evident. But Tina insists on.
Why not?
Because astronauts are in orbit of the planet. We cannot send a spacecraft to the edge of the Solar System!
The director was annoyed.
You can make a turn to Pluto and back. Drop my crew off and fly back into orbit.
What the turn?! This isn't a tour! And not on neighboring streets go! That's over five billion years!
How many earth years to fly to Pluto?
About ten years.
The girl counted something on her fingers and said:
Yes, no, I have time.
Are you kidding me?!
The director jumped from his chair by throwing thunder and lightning.
Yes. That is, no,
Tina sighed and looked pleadingly at the man. This is an excellent opportunity to explore Pluto in place. Is NASA does not want that? We take the tourists, the rocket will flies to Pluto and in parallel tourists will look at other planets. And NASA will receive a large sum of money from tourists on their projects.
Director pressed a button on the phone and ordered:
Call security.
She did not despair. She decided to try his luck in a private organization. This second organization that sent two colonies on Mars and was preparing to send a third. Tina was sure she wouldn't be denied here. But she was refused.
But, we can offer you to buy a small space shuttle,
a tall and thin middle-aged man in a business suit looked at Tina small eyes, fingering a pen.
I would like to look at it.
Yes of course. I will show you.
Mr. Dirk, the organizer of Mars colonization project, escorted the girl to the shuttle.
Atkins!
he shouted to a workman in a silver suit and helmet.
Mr. Dirk?
Atkins walked over to the man.
Show the shuttle to our esteemed lady.
Atkins hit the sidebar button, and the door of the shuttle slowly stood up.
The shuttle is equipped with a computer control panel. Flight can be operated manually. You can also translate to automatic control. It has a cryogenic sleep system and life support system
, told a man in a suit. There is a small kitchen. The shuttle is small and is not designed for long flights. And because fuel for the return trip will not be enough.
Why, then, it was built?
Tina asked.
This shuttle is designed to return astronauts from the main ship to Earth, in case of an emergency in orbit,
Mr. Dirk explained. The Shuttle's brand-new, we've never used it.
If there is not enough fuel, it turns out, we will not reach Pluto.
The prospect of acquiring worthless shuttle did not please the girl.
The shuttle is equipped with solar panels, which compensates half of the flight,
said Atkins.
Pluto is the most distant planet in our system, and the coldest. Sunlight does not reach him.
Tina was proud of the fact that she's not as stupid as it seemed.
Yes, it is. Before the flight, the shuttle will be
charged here on Earth. At take-off from our planet will be used fuel, and more - the energy of the solar panels. The computer system will automatically transfer the shuttle's flight, at the right time, from fuel to energy,
said Atkins. She looked doubtfully at Mr. Dirk.
And if, nevertheless, is not enough to fly or solar energy or fuel?
Do not worry.
Mr. Dirk hugged the shoulders guest. On the orbit of Mars is a gas station for spacecraft.
He certainly will reach Pluto? Will can the shuttle hold everything?
I'm sure our shuttle will hold everything. Its hull will withstand the ambient temperature and the temperature of Pluto. Except for the temperature of the sun. Only, we have no pilot for you,
Mr. Dirk said.
Okay,
she sighed in
