About this ebook

The 5G technology will increase the current exposure of the population to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields due to the inevitable installation of a very large number of intelligent antennas, both outside and inside buildings.
Numerous scientific publications have found an association between harmful effects on health and exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (EMF).
This book analyzes the changes that the new 5G technology will bring and details the different studies that confirm the health problems related to EMF radiation exposure.

    1. 5G TECHNOLOGY

The 5G technology will become the future connection network that will allow the internet of things, autonomous cars and smart cities. This new 5G network will use higher frequency wave spectra, improve the transmission speed, solve the physical impediments and interferences and host a greater number of devices.

The current 4G network uses low frequencies between 800 MHz and 2.6 GHz and is at the saturation limit, mainly due to its reduced spectrum and the increasing number of connected equipment. The 5G network would expand the band of the spectrum through the use of high frequency millimeter waves or MMW, whose frequency range is between 30 and 300 GHz, having already started the first tests between 26-38 GHz.

The inclusion of the higher frequency bands would facilitate the connection of a greater number of devices and eliminate the saturation. However, these waves of greater frequency present great difficulty to cross certain obstacles such as buildings and are usually absorbed by trees and rain. These problems are solved with the installation of countless smart antennas every 250 meters, of smaller size than the existing ones, both in the exterior and in the interior of the buildings, which would act as repeaters that would bounce the signal to avoid the buildings and reach any place in a city.

The 4G antennas have 8 ports to transmit and 4 ports to receive, while the 5G base stations are capable of supporting about 100 ports. In this way, the intelligent antennas would send and receive a greater number of signals at the same time. However, more antennas and users also carries a higher level of interference.

So that interference does not occur, the smart antennas will record the time it takes for the signal belonging to a 5G telephone call to arrive and the address from which it comes, that is, they will determine the place of origin, and, by means of a processing algorithm of signals, they will send the data choosing the best transmission route. Also, they will focus the signal so that it points in the direction of the user and they will order the data packets in an orderly manner so that they do not interfere with each other. In the same way, smart antennas and 5G telephones will be able to transmit and receive data simultaneously and on the same frequency, canceling the current transmission and emission shifts of the 4G network and doubling its capacity.

In Spain, the 5G network will use four bands: 700 MHz, 1.5 GHz, 3.6 GHz and 26 GHz, and its start is expected by 2020. The 3G network will be switched off in 2020 because all its functions are already made by 4G, while 2G will do so in 2025 as it is the only one compatible in old phones and in communication between machines.

The electromagnetic spectrum includes low frequencies, with wavelengths of kilometers of the radio waves, up to high frequencies, with wavelengths of the order of picometers of the gamma rays, passing through the visible spectrum, with wavelengths in the range of tenths of a micrometer. For its part, the high frequency electromagnetic waves have short wavelength and high energy, while the low frequency electromagnetic waves have long wavelength and low energy.

According to the biological effects resulting from the interaction between electromagnetic waves and the human body, we can classify the
