The Rampart Queen - Yennefer Ash

    Chapter 1

Keira Akin lunged for her best friend and snatched her sleeve. No, Sky! Don’t go in there!

Sky Lange spun around staring at her. What? Why not? She squinted up at the glass-enclosed skyscraper. The morning sun reflected off its many windows. It glistened like some enormous jewel. It’s only the office building. I go in there every morning. What’s the big deal?

Keira dropped her hand and shook her head. She shut her eyes tightly. She didn’t know what was wrong with her. I can’t explain it. I only know you can’t go in there.

Sky snorted. Come on! I have to go to work and so do you. Let’s go or we’ll be late.

She started to walk away, but Keira clung to her arm. No, Sky! Please, no!

Sky rotated, gaping at her with huge blue eyes. What in the world is going on with you? There’s no danger out there. You can see that as well as I can.

Keira peered over her friend’s shoulder. From here, she could see that Sky was right. Providence Square stretched beyond the fountain to the Embassy building on the other side. The Hall of Justice flanked the sunny paved expanse on the left side. The Senate building lifted its towering columns to the clouds on the right.

There was no danger out there. There never was and there never will be. Old ladies scattered birdseed for the pigeons. The fountain glistened in the morning breeze and wafted sweet music that bounced off the sheer walls. A blessed halo of peace and serenity shone over the whole scene.

Keira shuddered. She wrung her hands and whimpered under her breath. She thanked the stars it was only her best friend seeing her like this. She couldn’t bear the thought of breaking down this way in front of anyone else.

Sky moved across her line of sight. She blocked Keira’s view of the square. All right. You’re starting to freak me out. We’re not going anywhere until you tell me what’s going on.

Nothing. Keira flapped her hands in anguish. I had a dream, okay? I saw all this in a dream and there was... She faltered. She didn’t want to say it out loud. That would make it all too real. There were monsters over there and they tried to kill us.

Sky’s jaw dropped. Seriously? It’s not like you to get worked up over something like that. It was just a dream. Forget it.

I know! Keira shrieked. Don’t you think I know that?

Well, what do you want me to do? I can’t exactly miss work and you have that big negotiation this afternoon. We have to go over there.

Keira hunched her shoulders. She trembled every time she so much as glanced toward the Embassy. They tried to kill us. They planted a bomb to destroy the Senate and they...they shot the Chairman.

Sky shut her mouth with a click and her countenance took on that stony, immobile hardness Keira knew so well. Nothing could budge Sky when she got like this. If that’s the case, you should report it to security even if it was a dream. Will that satisfy you?

Keira cast another miserable glance around the Square.
