Chapter 1

The afternoon sun shone onto the kitchen windowsill of Jennifer’s small L.A. apartment, illuminating a photo of her laughing with her daughter, Olivia. The faint sound of music playing on the radio wafted in, and Jennifer two-stepped into the living room, her thick, blond waves glinting in the sunlight. Wildly gorgeous, she swayed her arms without missing a beat. Olivia, meanwhile, bounded around the room like a wild animal trapped in a cage. Jennifer caught her daughter as she ran by, gave her a quick peck on the cheek, and tickled her until she shrieked.

Finally letting her daughter go, Jennifer turned on the TV, regretting having given Olivia so much sugar cereal that morning. At nine years old, Olivia was small for her age, with bouncing curly red hair, and an unending amount of energy. Always on the move, Olivia’s animalistic tendencies could make the apartment feel even smaller than it was. Watching her daughter run around and around the coffee table, Jennifer sighed. She wished she could afford a bigger place for Olivia, but it was hard
