A long thundering noise shook the earth during the night. Nora heard it before she blacked out.
Where are they?
She had to find them. She started to get up from the rubble of her home but was prevented by the surge of pain from her ribs running down to her right leg. She gasped, breathing as lightly as she could to lessen the pain as it slowly left her body.
She surveyed her surroundings from where she was. It was day, but the sun was terribly diffused. She suddenly went into a frenzy of coughs and her arms were waving wildly as she suffered the pain going through her body.
She heard a car screeching to a halt from somewhere nearby and quick steps running towards her. Though she was hurting, she struggled to get up.
Don't get up! Hold on and we'll carry you to safety!
A man said. She couldn't see who. Her eyes had begun to sting. Her coughs started up again along with waves of pain. The lifting of her body did not help either. The multiple masked faces were blurred as the wind whipped dirt around and hit her face. She fought the fainting spell threatening to engulf her.
I can’t find my family,
she said, hearing her voice as it went from normal to a whisper. Protesting had weakened her incredibly fast and caused her to finally black out.
~Two days later~
A white blurry image appeared as she opened her eyes. She blinked a couple of times to sharpen her sights on the texture of the ceiling. She looked around her small room. It only contained things of necessities. There were no flowers, balloons, or get-well cards. She was alone.
The last thing she remembered was trying to search for her family within the rubble of their home, when her rescuers decided to take her away. She tried to lift herself and felt a thudding soreness from her ribs down to the right side of her leg. The hard cast encasing her body prevented her from moving fully. She groaned with impatience.
Let me out! Get me out of here! Someone let me out!
She said loudly. Her energy was already running low. A nurse rushes in and quickly tries to calm her down.
What's wrong with me? Is my whole body broken? Will I be able to walk again?
Nora asked frantically. The nurse continued trying to sooth her.
What about my family? Are they here somewhere?
She said with wet eyes. The nurse gave her a sympathetic look.
Sweetie, I don't know,
said the nurse in a hushed tone. Just stay calm and save all of your questions for the doctor.
But can't you at least tell me what's wrong with me?
Nora asked.
I’m sorry but-
Come on! I'm sure there's a clipboard with my file on it that you can read out to me! I need to get out of here.
Giving up, the nurse took out a syringe and fed its contents into the tube that led into Nora's IV. Nora felt its effects quickly.
NO!
She struggled to scream before she blacked out.
************************************************
Nora woke to a soothing male voice. She opened her eyes to a blurred image. She said her brother’s name but the response had indicated that he was not her brother. She blinked away the blur and saw that he was the doctor. She was relieved.
Hello, doctor,
she said with a faint smile. The doctor politely nodded with a warm smile. Is my body broken?
She asked.
No, you have two broken ribs and a slight fracture on your right leg. Other than that, I'm happy to report that with a little therapy, you'll be fine,
he replied.
How much longer must I stay in this cast?
she asked.
At least a month or so should do, but you have to relax,
he assured.
My family?
She said looking at him. He looked at her with a sympathetic look but said nothing.
Who can I go to for answers?
All right just don't start to stress yourself,
he said, giving her his little notebook and pen. Nora quickly wrote down the names of her mother and brother. As she went to her task, the doctor had surged some sedative into her IV. Nora's writing slowed as she felt the effects creeping in quickly.
~Two and a half months Later~
Nora was getting more restless as the time wore on. It had been a painfully slow, two and a half months since she had gotten there and still no word from anyone. Therapy was no friend when she first started, but she got used to it. She was determined to get her right leg back so that she could get the heck out of there. That determination got her through her recovery.
She plopped on her bed after getting out of a long hot bath. Therapy was brutal today and the bath helped sooth away the soreness of the muscles in her leg. At least she no longer walked funny. She sighed as she leaned against her propped pillow.
A man in army attire walked into her room with the doctor close behind him. She gasped as she sat up quickly. The man had a stern face that seemed to have frozen in place.
The family that you have listed… They are not among the survived.
Nora's heart drummed with a dull ache. She opened her mouth, but no sound was released. She nodded slowly. Her tears were nowhere to be found.
She had the sense that somehow, she had lost someone that brought much more pain than she felt now for her lost family. She couldn’t even cry. But who?
She heard the military man clear his throat. She looked up
at him, not sure she should say anything.
He saw a determination in her eyes and gave her a tight smile before nodding and walking out. She watched him go and kept her eyes to the hallway. She let all the information sink in. The doctor walked up to her and she looked up at him.
I am sorry for your loss. I insist that you rest now and tomorrow morning I will make sure everything is fine before I sign your release,
he said. He quietly closed her door as he walked out. She looked at the little clock on the dresser beside her. It said 4:30pm. She got up to shut off the light and then returned to bed. She wrapped the blanket tightly around her.
No family left. She was horrified that she felt a sense of freedom. Was it right to feel this way for people shared her life with? It made her wonder if she loved them at all or resented them. Why? Maybe she never knew what love was, maybe she was just afraid to be alone.
I'm over analyzing this way too much, it’s the shock, she thought. She felt exhausted physically and emotionally. She closed her eyes and listened to her breathing as she drifted into a fitful sleep.
****************************************************
Nora sat within a small group of women. They were all distraught. The air felt gloomy with hopelessness. Nora wanted to run from there. She didn't see anybody she wanted to bond with. A meaty woman in white scrubs stood before them, waiting a few more moments before starting. It seemed that the present six were it.
I'm just going to get down to it. All women are assigned a partner.
she said in an unfriendly tone. Nora heard herself groan, everyone else quietly bowed their heads.
What are you talking about?
Nora demanded.
"That's right, we go back to the
