    WISH

"T rue forgiveness is when you can say, ‘Thank you for that experience.’"

    Oprah Winfrey

It was raining as hard as it could, and the misery of this couple not even holding hands anymore on the soaked streets of Hamburg was noticeable even from outside. Elke was astonished at how she and Lars had reached this emotionless state. The final blow was Lars' tattoo of a good luck angel on his back. Elke knows Lars had just had this tattoo done, and she overheard his phone conversation the night before.

You know I wonder when I'll find that girl. The curly-haired, olive-skinned angel who I had to do the tattoo on my back... Lars said to someone on the phone.

Elke couldn't believe her ears. She was surprised that she was unable to give meaning to this tattoo and actually that she had drawn the girl Lars was looking for. It seemed that her love could only go this far. While walking in the rain, they saddened each other with terrible silence. They came to Alsterpavillon, where they first met. Let's not go in at all, if you want, Elke said. Let's leave it here. Let it end.

Okay, however you like, Lars said. I’m sorry for everything.

Elke didn't think it was going to be this easy. Lars had reset his emotions and turned to leave without even saying goodbye. Elke just stood there. She hesitated for a moment about whether to enter. She turned back to not ruin the beautiful moment of when she met Lars at this cafe with a parting moment. Her tears mixed with the rain as she walked along the road, crying for minutes.

This devastating blow came even more heavily before her trip to America.

Elke struggled to open her eyes the next morning with the effect of the sleeping pill she had taken. She looked urgently at her watch. She had to go to Los Angeles that morning for a new construction project. Elke was working as an architect at an American company. The meeting for the new project was going to be held in Los Angeles, where the company’s headquarters were. She wondered whether this City of Angels she was visiting for the first time would be able to make her happy.

The person waiting to greet her when she got off the plane was her handsome colleague George, with whom she had been corresponding for about two years but had never met. George was an architect, and he followed Elke through her designs. He was utterly amazed at her talents. They ate dinner together and talked about the new project throughout the meal. George left Elke at her hotel, and they parted ways until the meeting that next morning. Elke's hotel overlooked Venice Beach from the most beautiful spot. It was great that it had such a wonderful view, but Elke clung to an emptiness, big enough for her not to be able to see this beauty. The next day was important. She had to go into the meeting with energy, so she went to bed early.

The meeting that morning lasted quite a long time, but it was successful. It was decided that Elke would stay for another two months to restructure some parts of the project. George offered to go to the coast together after the meeting to get something to drink. Elke accepted this proposal. George was making her happy with his conversation and making her laugh with his jokes. Spending time together was genuinely good for Elke. She was having a fun time with him and didn’t feel lonely at all.

Only three weeks had passed since the new project began. Elke worked during the week at a company and, on the weekends, would explore Los Angeles with George’s surprise plans. At lunch, George placed two plane tickets on the table next to Elke’s plate.

What would you say to have breakfast in Las Vegas tomorrow? he asked.

Really? Great, I would say, Elke replied.

She was truly delighted. It was her first time going to Las Vegas.

When Elke and George arrived in Las Vegas, it seemed to Elke like they were in an American movie. George held Elke’s hand as they got in a limousine that came to get them from the airport. Elke wasn’t the least bit uncomfortable from this approach.
