Tales of Kelvin - E.C. Emmanuel
CHAPTER ONE
G rrrrrrrrrriiiinnnnnnngggg ,
went the alarm clock that was placed on the study table right next to Kelvin’s bed. It was the third time the alarm clock rang but Kelvin wouldn’t wake up because he was enjoying his sleep. He wrapped himself back with the blanket and dozed off again.
Kelvin! Kelvin!
Mrs. Sophia Eze, Kelvin’s shouted. Mr. and Mrs. Ken Eze, they lived in the Southern part of the country. They had two children, Kelvin and Mary but Kelvin was the eldest. Both siblings attended the same school, Kelvin was in primary five while Mary was in primary two. They are Christians and went to church twice in a week. Mr. Ken works as an architect while his wife Mrs. Sophia is a trader who deals in foodstuffs. She would wake up very early in the morning to prepare breakfast and get the children ready for school, pack their lunch in their lunch boxes before getting herself ready to go to the market where she stays until six in the evening, then she would come back and prepare dinner. She had just finished making breakfast for the family. It was almost 8 O’clock in the morning and Kelvin was yet to get ready for school. He had always been like that, sometimes he would pretend to be sick and daddy would have to drive only Mary to school. Mr. Ken Eze, Kelvin’s dad was sitting in the dining room going through some old news stories in an old newspaper while waiting for his eight year old son to come downstairs for breakfast before he would take him and his sister, Mary to school. Angrily, Mrs. Sophia climbed up the stairs, stamping her feet loudly, loud enough to wake the dead, she knew her son didn’t want to go to school. She pushed the door open and found him shivering on the bed. What is it dear?
she touched his forehead.
Mom, I feel hot inside and my head is aching. I will go to school tomorrow, please.
Kelvin said with a shaking voice.
Kelvin, for how long would you keep lying? Who taught how to lie? Is that what I taught you? Now, you will stand up and get ready for school!
Mrs. Sophia shouted. Wait! You did not come down for morning devotion. Have you said your morning prayers?
No, no, I don’t want to go to school today.
He started crying. His mum dragged him out of the bed into the bathroom where she quickly brushed his teeth and bathed him with cold water amidst all his struggles.
Honey, what is it? Why is Kelvin crying?
Kelvin’s dad asked as he looked up from the newspaper, he hated it when his son cried.
Kelvin refused to go school, he was pretending to be sick,
his wife answered.
Then, let him be, someone cannot joke with health, if he is sick, let’s take him to the clinic so that he should get some injections.
No dad, I am fine, I will manage.
Kelvin hated injections. Slowly he ate his food, packed his bags and followed his dad to the car.
