The history of Hookah
The term 'hookah' is derived from a Hindustani word 'Huqqa' which means 'casket', 'water pipe'. For the first time, the Hookah was invented by ‘Abu'l-Fath Gilani’, who was a Persian doctor and personal physician of Mughal emperor Akbar (1542 – 1605 AD).
Invention of Hookah
With the introduction of tobacco to Hindustan/India by Jesuits, around the 15th Century, glass exporting started to India through East India Company of British. It was followed by the manufacturing of glass in India. Abu'l-Fath Gilani invented the water pipe when he was attempting to purify smoke with the help of water. The instrument used for this purpose was a glass base which was later named Shisha
.
Hookah at this stage was very primitive but soon it spread rapidly from the subcontinent to Persia, where the real advancements were made and the mechanism of hookah was changed and moulded to its final and current shape. The Safavid dynasty of Persia is famous for developing hookah and working for its propagation. The Hookah made its way as a luxury item to be owned by the rich and the noblemen which boasted their higher social statuses with the display of hookah in their daily routine and during public meetings.
Soon, Hookah became a compulsory part of Persian culture. Persians also introduced a rather darker and more strong leaf of tobacco (Ajami)
The same custom was followed in India where hookah not only became an exotic luxury but also a way of displaying nobility and prestige. Landlords and rich men of the country would smoke hookahs in their meetings as well as during public ceremonies.
Various craftsmen took it as a great pride to design the pipe of hookah showing fine woodwork with great aesthetic sense. and redefined the look of the pipe through woodworking. Followed by their king and other noblemen of the country, soon hookah became a very demanded thing nationwide and its rapid mass production made it accessible to everyone. A whole new industry of hookah emerged along with 'hookah servers (servants serving the hookah to noblemen)'.
The court of king Shah Jahan had its official hookah servants.
The hookah produced for common people was relatively simple, with no craftsmanship; hence cheaper, however, they served the purpose, just fine.
17th Century Hookah Evolution
During the 17th century, hookah had prevailed in Persian and Indian cultures already.
Later, hookah made its
