Chapter One
On Wednesday evening, Jessica Roberts stood outside Burke’s Pub for fifteen minutes before she found the courage to step inside. She would have stayed on the street longer, reading an article about the murders on her phone, but her hands were numb from the chilly February air, and she didn’t even have a drink.
She stepped inside the pub, the cloying smell of beer hitting her at once, the buzz of conversation so loud that it stopped her for a second, making her wonder if she really wanted to do this.
Burke’s was full of young professionals who worked near Grafton Street. The pub was long and narrow. A mahogany bar ran its length. The wall opposite the bar was lined with stools. No room for tables, so a wooden shelf ran along the wall.
As Jessica entered, the TV on the wall sprang to life. The pub filled with the booming voice of a football commentator.
She felt a nervous chill, thinking of the killings, one in Paris and one in Milan. Both had taken place over the previous month, and people were starting to talk
