I stare at the laptop screen and bite my lip lightly, tapping a slow rhythm out onto the table with a red-painted nail.
This...isn't how I wanted to spend my Friday evening.
I miss her so much it hurts, a physical ache that resides somewhere in my heart but that's radiating out to the rest of my body, spiraling, agonizing and yearning as it blossoms into each atom of my being.
My wife, Marina, has been gone for four weeks. I say four weeks
because, if I say a month,
I think it'd break my heart. She's not gone as in leaving me, and she's very much alive, but right this moment, she's an ocean away—in England.
Marina works with subsidiaries of companies who make cardboard. That doesn't sound sexy, but she loves her work, and it actually affords her a lot of travel, something she's been obsessed with her whole life, seeing far-off places and cities and sampling all of their amazing cuisines and cultures.
Now, normally I'm able to accompany her on these trips, but this time, I couldn't make it. I had the flu.
Marina promised me that it would take about two weeks to settle the new head into his role at the latest cardboard pulp plant in England, and then she'd be right back in my arms. I'd hardly miss her, she said. She made sure that I'd be okay taking care of myself when I was sick, and though she wished she could stay home with me, there wasn't any choice—she had to go, and we both knew that.
She swore it'd be a short separation. She'd be there and back again. But it...hasn't been short. Because she made that promise to me four weeks ago. The work she had to do overseas proved not as straightforward as she'd expected; there were unforeseen setbacks at the plant.
I got over my flu two weeks ago.
And now here I am...
Missing her.
There's just something about Marina. Something that draws me to her like the sun holds the planets in orbit. From the very first moment I saw her, I was smitten, and I really wasn't the type of person to believe in love at first sight. If you'd told me before I met Marina that I would ever experience that, I probably would have laughed.
Honestly, before Marina, I didn't even believe in love at all.
Not until her.
I tap my finger on the table again and glance at my laptop screen. She hasn't signed on yet. We were going to have a online video date tonight, but she's late. The meeting with the new plant
