    Twins

    Chapter One

The year is 1995 A young couple has gone for a day out. They are both twins. As fate would have it, they have born to them two sets of twin’s two girls now four years old and two boys 11 months old. They met in college and are both very successful.  Marcus works as a design engineer creating plans for larger buildings. Julia is a professor of teaching music. She works at the college in Tahlequah. Taking care of twins can be a handful. The girl’s mischiefs but the boys are good. This may be because they are too young to cause a ruckus with each other. Like babies when they were side by side in a stroller, they would hold hands. The girls were always dressed in the same clothing.

The children are with a baby sitter at their home in Flint Creek. It is a gated community just off highway 10. Marcus works in Tulsa but spends most of his time working from home. He only has to drive to Tulsa is to go to meetings and to submit designs. Alex works at the college and helps Cliff out when she gets home. Marcus has no fixed work hours as there would be on a normal job. He takes care of the twins while he is home. If he needs to go to Tulsa a girl not far from them watches the children. The couple decides to go to the theater in Tahlequah Oklahoma. The movie Braveheart is playing there starring Mel Gibson. They enjoy their time together while watching the movie. His arm around her and they are holding hands just as teenagers might do. After the movie is over they go to their car and start home. They enjoyed the night out and are chatting back and forth on the way home. The traffic on 62 is lite as the drive towards home. Marcus turns north on highway 10. This road has numerous ups and downs with many sharp curves. Marcus is concentrating on the road and Julia is relaxing and recounting the good time at the movie. As they come around one of the sharp corners there are two cars one in each lane. Julia sees them and screams; look out! The two cars meet in a horrific head-on collision.

They are pinned in the car both are close to death. They are aware that every moment may be their last. They reach out towards each other and hold hands. The father feels his wife’s hand go limp he worries about the children. They soon may have no parents. There is no one in their family that can take over the care of them. He takes out a pen and writes on the back of the sun visor Please take care of my children he hears sirens coming and passes out from blood loss. As they are working trying to free him, he crosses the river and is with his wife in the Promised Land.

The man in the car calls the Sheriff’s department. He was the one that was in the correct lane. His car was slightly damaged in the wreck but he is okay. The driver that hit the couple seems to be alive. He peers into the car driven by Marcus. It does not look good neither of them is moving.  The sheriff arrives in just a few minutes he was on the 412 not far from the scene. He gets out and looks at the couple’s car. It is very badly damaged. The engine appears to have been driven through the firewall into the front seat. He reaches in and puts his finger on Marcus’ throat. He feels no pulse. Then he goes to the other side to examine Julia. He reaches inside the car and puts his finger on her throat. He determines that both have expired.

Next, he goes to the other driver involved in the head-on collision. He has to break the window to reach inside. The man groans as he smashes the glass. He picks up his radio and calls for an ambulance. Then he asks a State Trooper to do the accident investigation. An ambulance out of Kansas Oklahoma is there along with a fire truck. They have to use the Jaws of Life to get the man out of the car. He is then transported to the hospital.

The State Trooper arrives and begins his investigation. First, he goes to the man who is by the car that was slightly damaged in the accident. Introducing himself as Officer Randolph he asks the man his name. Still a little shaking up by the whole thing he stammers his name, Ben Cooper. Can you tell me what happened here the officer asks? I will try Officer. The black car was behind me for just over a mile I think. There were no turning lanes and he kept blowing his horn. I was doing the speed limit I wanted to pull over and give him the road but there was no place to get off the road. The Trooper says; yes I know this road well. It is very dangerous to drive on. Well, officer, he backed off a few hundred feet before this curve in the road. I thought he finally got the idea I was not going to speed up for him. I saw a car behind me coming at me at a high rate of speed. He went around me and the other car was coming towards him. They met head-on and his car bounced off mine after they collided.

Can I ask how the people in the car going north are? Officer Randolph says; I am sorry to say they are both dead. May I ask you for your driver’s license and proof of insurance? Ben goes to his car and shows the officer the papers. He rights down the driver's information. I will let you go on your way if you think your car is drivable after I get all the measurements and finish my initial investigation. It is obvious that you are not at fault in this. I appreciate your help in filling me in on the lead up to the crash. You may be called upon to testify to this if and when this goes to court.

After taking multiple photos of the scene and measurements of the location of the cars involved He walks over Ben. You may continue on your journey. I want to thank you for all your help. Ben goes to his car and drives off. He is very sad about the couple that was killed in the accident. He wonders to himself if there was anything he could have done differently to prevent it. He feels this will haunt him all the days of his life.

Wreckers arrive and hookup the car the couple is in. A canvas is thrown over the car and tied down. They will be removed back at the fire department. A second wrecker hooks up the second car and it will be taken to a secure lot where further examination can be done. Trooper Randolph goes first to the fire department where they are cutting the young couple’s car open to remove the victims. Once they are removed the officer searches them for identification. He gathers all he can and puts it all in an evidence box. The couple is taken to the medical examiner. He determines their identity by the driver’s licenses he finds.  He also finds photographs in Julia’s purse of her children. He sees the sun visor turned down and wonder why the driver would have done that. He shines his flashlight on and sees the message Please take care of my children.

Then he goes to the place where the other car is being examined. He pulls up in the lot and walks to the car. One of the two officers looks at him. Bear, (his nickname) I think I found the cause of the accident. He holds up a bottle of Jack Daniels the bottle is broken but the seal is not intact. The amount that was spilled on the floor mats tells me there was only a half of a bottle left when the car crashed. Bear reports all he has found pertaining to the accident to local headquarters. He is advised to go to the hospital where the driver was taken to get the following report. The wreckage has been removed. They ask you to bring in your breathalyzer. He refuses to give a sample of blood and we need the test of the breathalyzer to make him consent.

The trooper arrives at Siloam Springs Hospital at 1 am. This would be 2 and a half hours since the crash. He goes to the room where the driver is lying in bed. The man is awake and does not appear to be in any pain. He asks the man’s name and he stumbles over his speech. After getting the man’s name, he asks him to take the breathalyzer in his mouth and blow. He refuses to do it. Bear says if you refuse it will go down as if you confessed that you were drunk at the time of the accident. He finally agrees and the first time he doesn’t blow hard enough. He is asked to repeat the test again. This time it is enough to give a reading. Bear looks at the readout it says 2.3 and the max allowed is .08. He takes out his handcuffs and says. Sir, you are under arrest for driving while intoxicated.  Other charges may be added later. As he handcuffs the man to the rail of the bed the man is very upset. I will have your job for that. What is your badge number? Bear takes out one of his cards and hands it to the man. Here I would not want you to spell it wrong.

Bear goes back to his squad car and reports the new found evidence to headquarters. The officer in charge at the time asks him to go to tact two. Bear switches his radio to the secondary channel on his radio. He is asked to meet the on-call grief pastor back in Kansas. You will go with him to the home of the couple and determine if there is anyone at home. We know there are four children, where they are is not known at this time.

Bear drives back to Kansas the minister is waiting for him at the intersection of 10 and 412. They drive one following the other to the gate at Flint Ridge. The emergency code is known by all law enforcement. They drive to the address given to them. Both get out of their cars and go towards the house. The porch lights are on and they ring the bell. After ringing it several times a young girl comes to the door. It is obvious she was sleeping in her clothes. Bear identifies himself to the girl and asks who she is. The girl says; I am the baby sitter my name is Susan. He asks where the other children are. She says they are sleeping, where is Marcus and Julia?

The minister says I am Pastor John. Something bad has happened. They have been in a car accident. Susan asks are they alright? The minister replies no they were both killed. Susan gasps, what will I tell the children and who will take care of them? Bear says children’s services will take care of the children. The minister asks if she can stay until they awake. That way they will not wake up to a stranger being here. I can stay until children’s services arrive in the morning. Susan has tears in her eyes, she says she will stay until they awake.

Bear says to Pastor John, thanks for staying here with her. I will go to my car and call headquarters. They have an emergency number for children’s services that is answered 24 hours a day. I hope I can get someone here before 8 am. They are called by the local headquarters. It only takes 15 minutes when the headquarters responds. They have someone from Tahlequah that should be there by 7 am. Bear says he will stay until they get there. It is only an hour away; maybe he can get a little background from the babysitter. Back inside he asks the babysitter questions.

Bear asks Susan do you know if they have any relatives living nearby. She says that is the reason this is so sad. Julia lost her parents in a plane crash about 5 years ago. Marcus lost his parents in a car crash 3 years ago. As far as I know, there is no one else in the family Susan’s sister was in the plane crash and Marcus’s brother was in the car. I think the grandparents are gone also. So the kids have no family left. Bear can tell she really cares about the children and he asks. How long have you been babysitting for them? She responds since the girls were infants. They are 3 and almost 4 years old. Bear is taking notes the girl goes to the minister. She is obviously very religious. She asks Pastor John if he can say
