Chapter One: Who is this lady?
You're probably wondering, why is she sharing this information? I believe that the more professional, streamlined and clean online tarot readers are, the more we bring up our sales and feedback ratings. When we do that, not only are we helping ourselves, but we are also getting awareness out to shoppers. Let me tell you about the great tarot reading I got on Etsy!
The word spreads, the buyers flock. What’s good for your business, is good for my business. I'm not worried about splitting the pot. The customers that come to Etsy are truly infinite, and grow with each day.
Next, you’re wondering: Who is this lady? Maybe you just did a quick search on Etsy, and you can't find me. So how do you know I know what I'm talking about? Much like The Fool, you'll have to go on a leap of faith here. I am publishing this book under a pen name for client privacy. That is the most important part of gaining repeat clients as a reader.
How could my name violate my clients’ privacy? Because some new readers make this huge mistake that annoys potential clients. If you've done it already, it's okay, just stop and move forward.
What’s the mistake? New readers go to established reader's shops, go through their feedback, and start sending messages to clients who have left feedback, offering free readings, or try to encourage them to make a purchase from their new shop. Why is this a mistake?
1. It is against Etsy's policy.
2. The fact is, 99.9% buyers are going to ignore you, report you as spam to Etsy, or even block you or report you directly to Etsy as harassment.
3. Future potential clients may remember you as that person who tried to troll them for a sale, and will be less likely to buy anything from you.
Now that I’ve explained the reason for my pen name, let me tell you briefly who I am. Because you'd like to know I have something to say, but at the same time, you aren't here for my biography, are you?
I've associated with the term witch my entire life, but claimed it about 25 years ago. Tarot reading was not a part of my witch practice until I opened my tarot shop. Tarot was something I learned on the fly. Which means if you already know tarot, you've got a leg up on starting your business, and might beat my three months to full-time income story. It also means if you've been considering tarot, but afraid to open a business because you haven't completed your studies yet, there is a strong chance you can do what I did, but quicker.
My belief is, to make a tarot business work, you have to believe in its power but you also have to have the business end of things figured out, and that is what I am sharing with you in this book. This is not a how to guide on learning tarot. This is a book that lays out how I've run a successful Etsy Tarot business. Some information presented may translate to other businesses on Etsy, especially people sending digital items. Some of this information may translate to other tarot selling platforms in addition to Etsy.
While the focus of this book is the business end, spiritual speak is mixed in as well here and there, because that’s what tarot does to me. If you're here for the tarot, you're likely used to this kind of language and at home with it. If you are looking for tips for another Etsy business and just curious about what I have to say, you may roll your eyes sometimes. That's okay.
I'm 40 years old, living in the USA, and for constraints out of my hands, cannot work outside of the home. I have children at home and a spouse who works full-time. I'm an eclectic witch who reads tarot, oracle, and channels or downloads information from what I refer to as Spirit. I don't pretend as though my spirituality is the only way or that I have everything right when it comes to the ethereal world around us, however, in this book I do use some of my spiritual verbiage. Perhaps you call Spirit by a different name; I sometimes work with specific beings that I call by different names. Perhaps you do not believe in Spirit, that's fine too. However, during this book, I use the term Spirit most often when talking about the Universe and the spiritual side of tarot.
As I'm sure you do, I have a full list of responsibilities that come from outside of Etsy. This is a side gig. A side gig that makes me, on a bad month
$1,500, an average month $3,000, and on my best month $5,000. There are readers on Etsy who make way more in a month than I do, and it isn't because their prices are astronomically higher and they are sought after from all over the world. Usually, it is because they work more than the couple of hours a day I do now on this business.
I used to work around the clock like that, and decided to scale back over the last year. I average about three hours of work a day currently. I’ve stretched that out to eight to twelve before when I decide to pull in new clients. I am aware I can make way more than I do currently if I put the extra time in again, but I don't, and I'm happy where I'm at. Perhaps you can put in more hours. If you put in the work, effort, and follow a lot of what I outline in this book, you can see big numbers. It takes a minute though. You aren't going to pull in $2,000 on your first week, unless you're bringing your own clients. My first month on Etsy I made $20. The third month I made $1,000.
No matter what you want to make, and what you foresee, your hours being as a reader on Etsy, you will have to sacrifice more time in the beginning. I did in those first three months. I worked way fewer hours in my $5,000 month, than I did in my first $1,000 month.
This book is my experience, outlining exactly what I've done to make the money and sustain an average five-star rating.
Chapter Two: The Decision
So, as you've learned by the title and the previous chapter, this book is how I sold tarot readings on Etsy. This is not the only place online to sell your service, but it is where I found success. Why did I choose Etsy? A simple and personally lazy reason. I understand the Etsy layout.
I already sold crafts and artwork on Etsy several times over the years, and was familiar with the format. As many crafters can attest to, it is a simple website with a professional vibe that many buyers feel confident shopping on. I did not have success selling crafts on Etsy as many people have, but I knew it was the place I wanted to set up shop. Sure, there have been changes to their platform over the years, but I felt comfortable there, and did not want to learn a new format. After I found success on Etsy in the first few months as a reader, I considered opening a second shop on other online marketplaces, but I decided not to in the end because I didn't want to extend myself too thin.
Though not an exclusive list, other popular places to sell tarot readings online:
Creating your own website: I tried this after several years of success on Etsy, but chose to do away with it as the clients I had preferred Etsy, and I had very little organic traffic over there. This was something that I could have put time and money advertising, but I decided against that.
