PEOPLE Grease! - The Editors of PEOPLE

    now.

    Shooby Doo-Wop She-Bop!

    Rydell Forever

Set in 1958, Grease answers the musical question: can summer lovin’ between a greaser and a good girl survive senior year?

THEY GO TOGETHER Spoiler! (If that’s possible after 40 years.) At the year-end school carnival Sandy and Danny are back on, with the whole gang singing, We’ll always be like one.

DRIFTIN’ AWAY Sandy (Olivia Newton-John), set to return to school in Australia, asks Danny (John Travolta) if this means the end. It’s only the beginning, he promises. Roll opening credits!

While Sandy recalls to the ladies we stayed out till 10 o’clock. Hmm. What they agree on: their summer dreams, ripped at the seams.

‘Well, here we are again’ ‘Yeah, but this time we’re seniors—and we’re gonna rule the school’

    —The Pink Ladies

TELL ME MORE Sandy’s family decides to stay in America, and she doesn’t realize that she’s ended up at Danny’s school, Rydell High. In Summer Nights they recount their fling rather differently. Danny brags about making out under the dock

REUNITED, AND IT FEELS SO BAD The Pink Ladies (Didi Conn, Jamie Donnelly, Dinah Manoff) orchestrate a surprise reunion of the summer lovers at a pep rally. Sandy’s thrilled, but Danny, hoping to impress his T-Bird pals, pretends he barely knows this bubbly new cheerleader. Shattered, Sandy hurls her pom-poms at his feet and storms off in tears.

GIRLS’ NIGHT IN At a slumber party Sandy catches Rizzo (Stockard Channing, following photo) mocking her prudish ways, singing Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee. Later, Marty (Manoff, above) shows off a flock of romantic correspondents. I’m a terrific pen pal, she tells Sandy, hopelessly devoted to each and every one. On the menu: cheap wine and Twinkies.

‘What happened to the Danny Zuko I met at the beach?’

    —Sandy

‘I do not know. Maybe there’s two of us. . . . Why don’t you take out a missing-person’s ad?’

    —DANNY

LIGHTNING STRIKES Kenickie (Jeff Conaway) buys a beat-up car that needs a serious revamp before drag racing on Thunder Road. In a slick fantasy sequence in auto-shop class, Danny predicts the so-called Greased Lightning could be a major piece of machinery.

    ‘This car could be systematic . . . hydromatic . . . ultramatic . . . why, it could be greased lightning’

    —Danny

LET’S GET PHYSICAL Sandy starts dating school jock Tom (Lorenzo Lamas), which prompts a jealous Danny to give sports a try.

Coach Calhoun (Sid Caesar) introduces him, unsuccessfully, to basketball, wrestling and baseball before he at last sees the virtue in avoiding team activities and running
