    Strange Vines

Moonlight faded into the dawn of the early morning. Its essence peeling away from the earth and Gaia’s heart began to beat as the thrill of a thousand songbirds orchestrated their voices into a symphony. Cro let his fingers slide along the massive oak tree, and then he took a tentative step into the undergrowth.

The air was hot and caused his temperature to rise. Beads of sweat formed across his brow. The land was breathing beneath the soles of his feet. He took a moment to survey the land, everything was uneven here. Not far from where he was, rocks jutted out. Vines inundated the path he found himself on. Using his hands to pull them away from his face, the expanse became clear. He moved with elegant precision, relying on tree moss, to direct his steps. He had gone a mile when his foot hit the landing.

He winced, as the tips of sharp stones lacerated his flesh. A spasm spread through him with vitriolic intensity. When he touched his knee, the warm blood trickled into his hands.

A waterfall rose in the distance like two palms in search of the sky. Water trickled down, creating a thunderous explosion that filled the background. Cro’s eyes met the reflection of Eagle. Her image moving sardonically through the opaque stream. He transfixed his gaze upon the likeness.

She is still as beautiful as the first moment I saw her, he thought.

Eagle’s voice floated through the mist, as a song danced from her lips and rose into the air. Eagle’s song carried the bitterness of a woman who is in anguish. His esophagus constricted and his heart lurched in his chest. Grief ebbed its way up his spine and nestled near his heart. Raine’s voice was wrapped up in these mournful notes. The melody was reminiscent of the first sounds, Raine had produced from inside her mother’s belly.

He did not like to think of his daughter, and yet, she remained with him every day for the past year. Her image lived within the realm of the Bengata. He often heard her cries in the sunlight. Her memory throbbed like the slice of a knife wound, grating against his skin. Cro’s eyes closed of their own accord, as a river of despair ran through his veins.

For more than a year, Eagle refused to utter their daughter’s name. Cro believed that some forms of brokenness were so raw, they raged like a fire.

Light refracted through the waves, dancing on the stone walls of the caves. in the center, with the eternal glow cast down upon her, was Eagle. Her eyes were closed, her hands dipping into the glassy reflection, as liquid rolled down her body. It caught the light, casting a thousand tiny diamonds on her molten skin.

Her breasts rising from her chest. Cro’s eyes ran themselves across her, taking in every inch of the portrait. He stepped forward. His mind deliberated between going to her or turning around. He had thought about this moment for so long.

Every nerve ending still retained the memory of her skin beneath his fingertips. The soft voice that would spend hours mingling with his, under the growth. Yet, here he was with the love of his life and he was afraid. Cro shook
