    CHAPTER 1

The simple comforts of the motel room—four walls, a carpet, and a bed—took on the profound dimensions of a dream as Kat stepped inside. They seemed to catch the sharp edges and shocks of her quarry nightmare and say, Look, all that stuff happened a lifetime ago. Why don’t you tuck yourself into these soft sheets and feel safe again?

Tempting, but first she needed to fill in the blanks. She propped her rifle up against the wall behind the door and asked, What happened in there? Where are the other Wolves?

Chris groaned as he set his gun bag on the floor at the foot of the double bed. I don’t know where they are. He scrubbed his dirty face with even dirtier hands. I’ve got to find them.

But they lured you there for a reason.

They were going to hold me there until you delivered their new bikes. As a guarantee. If you reneged, they’d kill me.

Kat sank against the wall, slid down to a sitting position. She hugged her knees, trying to stitch the whole thing together in her mind. Moncada was making bold, aggressive moves, all to ensure this deal went through.

God knows what they’ll try next, he said. I’m thinking your Lynn isn’t in a great place right now. Not to mention the rest of my guys.

True about Lynn. They’d already roughed her up once. When Moncada got word that three of his Devils had been fast-tracked to the hot place, he might take it out on her, Vamp’s senior VP. Kat rang her right away, told her everything that had happened tonight and warned her to get out of Salamander for a while, at least until Kat returned.

In that case, I reckon it’s time we bring in some back-up, said Lynn.

    You’re thinking what I’m thinking?

First thing I thought of, as soon as the Devils came calling. We can’t do this alone, Kat.

I know. It’s gone too far. We’re in the middle of a turf war here.

Too many goddamn men. Lynn paused. Is Banely with you now?

    Uh-huh.

"Tell him from me—he’s brought this shit on himself. The Wicked Wolves, they should never have got involved. What did they think was gonna happen?"

He knows all that, Lynn. Believe me. We both do.

Chris glanced at her, then nodded gravely at the carpet.

You want me to spread the word, boss?

Kat closed her eyes, hit the wall with the back of her head several times, telling herself, There’s got to be some other way. Once you go down this path, it can only end in blood. But the blood was here. Who was she trying to kid? She’d killed three Devils tonight, so the Kat—the Black Kat—was already out of the bag. She was an outlaw again, fighting for survival. Do it, she said. Make the calls. Tell them we’re bringing Reunion Weekend forward a week this year.

    Done.

And one more thing: I want you to get word to Moncada. Don’t go yourself, but find out where he’s staying and pass this message on. Tell him to release the other Wolves or the deal’s off.

You sure? He’s still got the photos—

He won’t use them. He can’t. Not if he wants Vamp’s resources.

Well, I hope you know what you’re doing.

So do I. Stay safe, sister.

    You, too.

And there it was: a vow broken, a promise undone. The Vampiras were about to reform. For how long, she didn’t know. Nor did she know how many of them would even want to. But Reunion Weekend, according to Lynn, was always a bittersweet affair. Bitter because of what they’d lost, sweet because they still got to relive it for a couple of days every year.

Your old MC? Chris looked puzzled. Won’t that make things...worse?

Yeah, it will. For my enemies.

He sank back onto the bed. God, I’m so tired. I just want to sleep for a year.

Kat uncrumpled herself from the floor and somehow made it to the bed. She didn’t even have the strength to undress, just flopped down beside him and let him snuggle up to her. She draped her arm over him and smiled to herself. The smile resonated deep inside, but equally deep, the shadow of a warning began to spread. Because tonight she’d saved his life. No matter what came next, tonight had bound them together beyond words or feelings or anything she could express.

Tonight they’d become partners in crime.

Eleven years ago that would have made her the happiest gal in the world. Now, with everything she’d built from the ground up, with the wealth and power she’d gained, it made her a dangerous queen of business. And Kat knew she’d do anything to protect that business, to ensure its future. Those who helped her achieve that would be well taken care of, but once Vamp Bikes was safe again, she would turn her back on the outlaw life and everyone connected to it. Cruel, maybe, but she had to move on, for her own good and the good of everyone around her.

Unfortunately, that left no room for MC diehards who wanted her heart as well as her bed. Eleven years ago she might have found a way to make it work with Chris Banely. But the shadow of his club’s criminal activities would always be there, would only jeopardize the growth of her legit empire. She gazed into his peaceful, unshaven face for the last time. Life as an outlaw just had no future. Business—business was the only future for Kat Dellison. Such a shame business had to be a bitch.

IT WAS ALMOST NOON when Topher woke to an empty motel room. Kat had left, maybe in the morning, maybe during the night. A pang of regret swelled inside, kept him lethargic, disengaged as he showered, got dressed, planned his next moves. Christ, she hadn’t even left him a note or a voicemail. He knew she’d gone back to Salamander for a showdown with Moncada, but to not even talk it over with him, let him know when they might see each other again—shit, it was the
