      WINTER STARTED EARLY THIS YEAR.  Standing outside the doorway, that was my last pre-thought. And by pre-thought I mean, the last thought I remember thinking before everything changed, that my fingertips were cold, that I should have worn gloves, and how much it was going to hurt my knuckles to knock on the front door.
