My delicious guest - Renata Del Anjo

    Part 1

For the last seven years, Cláudio worked as a restocker in the Whale Supermarket. He had little expectations in that job. His only chance at a better life was to date the daughter of the owner.

Juliana was ugly and fat. Worse than that, she was annoying. She was 27. Cláudio was 21.

The girl had a crush on Cláudio; afterall, he was considered one of the most handsome guys in town. He had the looks of a leading man, angelical face and a toned body.

Cláudio was restocking toiled paper sets on the aisle, when Juliana approached.

    — Hi, Cláudio!

    — Hello, Juliana!

    — Today I’ll gather the folks to watch a movie in my place. Wanna go?

    — And this time your friends will come? Or we’ll be alone like last time?

    — You can rest assured my friends will come.

    — I’d like to come, Juliana. But I can’t – answered Cláudio, looking indifferent.

    — Seriously?

    — Yes, I have something already planned.

    — What is it?

    — Personal stuff.

    — Alright... there’s something I wanted to ask you.

    — You can ask.

    — Why don’t you answer me on whatsapp? I get hurt, you know?

Cláudio stopped restocking shelves and, looking seriously towards Juliana, asked:

    — You do know I have a girlfriend, don’t you?

    — Of course I do! You told me a thousand times.

    — Funny, it seems you don’t. You have got to stop sending me that kind of messages. I have a girlfriend!

    — Wake up, Cláudio! You have never even seen your girlfriend.

    — I’ve seen her a lot of times...

    — Where?

    — Through the webcam.

    — Virtual dating... – Juliana mocked him. – Why don’t you get a real girlfriend?

    — Larissa is real.

    — She could be a man passing as a woman! Never thought of that? She could be an organ trafficker wanting to steal your organs.

    — Where did you get that from? – asked Cláudio, laughing.

    — Keep your virtual girlfriend, but don’t complain about what you lost later... – and while telling this, Juliana dropped in the floor the toilet paper packs Cláudio had just finished arranging.

    — How distracted I am – said Juliana, cynically. She left laughing.

Cláudio looked at the packages and caught a deep breath.

Juliana was not worth being upset over, he thought. He grabbed the packages from the floor and started restocking the shelves.

The restocking gig was not easy. Beyond restocking, Cláudio had to help cleaning, unloading products that arrived and making deliveries.

It was an arduous job, and Cláudio was getting tired of it. He had no education. He had only his high school degree. But he wanted to change his life, wanted to have some prospects.

    Part 2

Cláudio spoke about his frustration with Larissa, his virtual girlfriend. She lived in São Paulo. They always chatted through Skype.

    — I’m kinda sad – said Cláudio. – I’m not feeling well today.

    — Why is that, my love?

    — It’s my life... today I stopped to think: am I really going to spend the rest of my life in that supermarket? Am I going to spend the rest of my life as a restocker?

    — It’s only up to you to change, unfortunately. You have to go to college.

    — How am I going to pay for it? My earnings barely pay my own bills. I could try to get a scholarship, a Pell Grant; but I’m a terrible student. A total embarassment. What I really want is to fulfill my dream...

    — Which dream?

    — Being a model.

    — Model?

    — Yes, a catwalk, fashion model. Like those who go to fashion shows wearing designer clothes.

    — You never told me about this dream...

    — It is a secret dream.
