Written by a Highland regiment Sergeant who witnessed the uprising firsthand, Forbes-Mitchell offers a detailed and personal account of the conflict, from the pro-British perspective. Despite the commonly held prejudices of the time, his writing is engaging, witty, and not as bigoted as one might expect from a Victorian author. Despite this, he still argues that the rebels were misguided and deserved severe punishment for their brutal crimes against innocent civilians, including women and children. His descriptions of the events that unfolded are both chilling and thought-provoking, drawing uncanny parallels to contemporary issues such as religious fanaticism.
