About this ebook
Bastien: There I was, sitting alone in the dark, in my broken-down apartment when the doorbell rings. Next thing I know, this sexy little thing barges right in, takes off his clothes and starts twerking in front of me.
He tells me he's a gift from my brother.
That he's here to give me a special little dance but I know better.
I know what Jesse is.
He's the one I've been waiting for my entire life.
He's my mate and he doesn't even have a single clue.
Jesse: One last dance for the night. Easy money. That's what I thought but the guy who opens the door looks more animal than man. His eyes glow a freaky gold. He's all muscle and ink. Sexy beast.
I almost leave but something makes me stay. I know that look. He's lonely. Broken-hearted. Just like I was. So I dance. I never expected to fall head-over-heels for him.

Chapter 1
BASTIEN DUNN HATED happy people. Happy couples in particular. Fixing his best death stare at the two twenty-somethings sucking at each others’ faces didn’t work. The elevator suddenly felt too cramped. Too small.
A growl rumbled from his chest. That made the woman move away from her partner. She looked ready to deliver some kind of tart remark at him but she halted. Turned pale. Common reaction for most people, especially humans who crossed his path.
What’s wrong Tina?
The guy glanced his way. He looked dazed, as if he only wanted to continue where they stopped. Must be nice, Bas thought, to have someone capable of making him forget the rest of the world existed.
He couldn’t be jealous of these two humans. Shouldn’t be.
Tina inched closer to her boyfriend to whisper, Look at his eyes. He’s one of those freaky shifters. Let’s get off the next floor.
Bas rolled his eyes. He could hear them just fine but he guessed they didn’t know shifters had excellent hearing. Tina made her way to the panel and jammed a finger into the number eight.
But that’s not my floor.
The doors hissed opened.
I’ll do you both lovebirds a favor,
he grumbled.
Bas pushed his way past the annoying humans. Not easy given his size.
He could hear their collective sighs of relief. Whatever. Bas had other things on his mind. Bas kicked at the steel door just as it closed, then clenched his fists by his side. Lately, his wolf felt agitated after a long day’s work at the construction site. He headed for the seldom-used stairs at the end of the floor and climbed five stories up.
Bas didn’t even break a sweat. Reaching his unit, he slid his key in and stared into the darkened interior. He’d never get used to coming back to an empty home. Not anytime soon. Worse, Rick’s scent faded with each passing day. Not that he cared. Rick and his new fuck buddy Johnson from the gas station could go to hell.
His beast felt restless again and began scratching away at his insides. He grunted, pushed both the wolf and the Change back.
Last time he lost it, he mauled another shifter in the woods. The human sheriff didn’t know how to handle him so they called his asshole brother Dan. Bas didn’t want another repeat of that episode.
There wasn’t a dominant shifter group in their little town of Blue Lake, no Alpha strong enough to put him in his place. That suited Bas just fine. He was used to people—humans, submissive shifters and other weaker paranormals being terrified of him.
Breathe in and out,
he muttered to himself.
Bas did that a few times until the wolf calmed down. Okay. So far so good.
He turned the switch on. Ignoring the mess, Bas walked to the kitchen and grabbed a beer from the fridge. Popping the cap open, he took a long pull and studied the contents of the fridge. Bas took a whiff of the old takeaway boxes and wrinkled his nose. He grabbed those, dumped them in the trash. Bas finished off his first bottle, grabbed two more.
With beers in hand, he returned to the living room. Bas sank into the couch. It was the only piece of furniture in the living room that remained intact after his re-decorating efforts the night before.
Re-decorating.
Bas scoffed.
More like wrecking everything in sight. Rick would be appalled. Nah. Rick was probably too busy boning Johnson to care. Dan warned him about humans. How they couldn’t be loyal. They were no better than bees who moved from one flower to the next after getting their fill of nectar.
He finished his second beer, set the third down on the floor and pulled out his phone. Bas decided he’d just order Chinese takeout again. He swiped at the screen, stared at his wallpaper for a few seconds. Bas kept forgetting to change it.
It was a photo of Rick and him during happier times. Rick looked like a million bucks, smiling at the photographer while he scowled. Bas couldn’t be bothered to change it tonight. He just wanted to fill his belly, then maybe drink himself to death. Shifters didn’t get drunk easily but he’d sure try his hardest.
He was about to dial his Mr. Lee’s, his favorite Chinese place when his phone buzzed. Dan’s stupid grinning face flashed across his screen. Bas was tempted to ignore Dan completely but knowing his brother, Dan might continue to annoy him all night. He answered.
What?
Bas practically barked.
Sheesh. Relax, bro. I’m just calling in to check how you’re doing.
Fine.
Bas wasn’t particularly interested in sharing the details of his pathetic love life with his brother.
You said that yesterday night and you still sound grumpy. I’m sending over something to cheer you up.
I’m not in the mood. What part of ‘fuck off’ don’t you understand?
he demanded.
Dan should seriously just mind his own business. He was the older brother here, even though most folks often mistook them
