    Blood:

    Do Bad Dreams Come True

    Chapter 1

He is acutely aware that every time I step into his office now, I have something fucked up to tell him, and he’s right. I don’t say a word. Don’t know what to say. Just sit down in that one cushioned chair and pick at a loose thread on my sweatshirt.

His green eyes sweep over me and his lips fall into a frown. He doesn’t appear to know what to say, how to start this conversation. That makes two of us. He pulls out a notepad from somewhere and sets a pen in between his teeth, his brown hair falling in his face.

So, Kendall, why are you here today?

I bite the inside of my cheek at the question and concentrate on the little paperweight on his desk. I haven’t looked at the name plate since I sat down, so I don’t even know his name. It doesn’t really matter. I don’t need to know.

I open my mouth to speak, but close it, fast. I can hear my mom’s voice in my head, telling me this is a waste of time, that my mind is just overactive, and that I have a strong imagination.

I wish that’s all it was.

I look at him, the doctor with no name, and I close my eyes. It’s easier for me to talk if I’m not looking at someone.

I have dreams, I reply, finally.

I haven’t opened my eyes yet but I hear the chair he’s in groan because he’s leaning back in it. Can you describe these dreams? he asks.

I almost feel like laughing. Sure I can. I open my eyes, staring into his. I can see them as clearly as I see you. They are all dead and I'm covered in their blood, thick and rusty-smelling. They are ghostly, but their lips are stretched wide, almost like they're smiling at me. I’m sure they... ARE smiling at me!

    Chapter 2

My name is Kendall Scott and I used to be normal.

My name is Kendall Scott and I am normal.

I chewed on the pen cap as I wrote. I debated scratching both things out and replacing them with something better.

I have nightmares and daydreams about people I know and strangers, and I’ve killed them all.

Throwing away the paper seemed like a smart idea, or saying I couldn't think of anything. For our English class, Miss Boatnite asked us to write about who we were. She wanted us to stand up at our desks and read what we put down, so I was scrambling to think of a good lie.

Looking around the room at the other students, something about all of them caught my eye. It was like I was watching a movie where the main character was so sure of himself, that he had nothing to be afraid of.

    That wasn’t me.

One by one, row by row, people began to rise. Each of them said things that I couldn’t use: I'm brave. I'm loyal. I'm not afraid of anything. I love my family. I love myself. I rolled my eyes, knowing the ones that said those things were lying. So that was what it came down to.

When I was finally called, I stood with shaking hands and took a breath before speaking.

My name is Kendall and I have nothing to hide.

    Chapter 3

Isaw the looks they were giving me. They were sitting in the corner of the room. They were the girls you paled in comparison to. Next to them, you were nothing. You were a shadow, creeping in their wake when they left you in the dust.

Fake wasn’t even the best word to describe them. Plastic was worse. I thought real hard about what I would name them, and only came up with one thing: The Imposters. It sounded like a movie, didn’t it? Yeah, that’s what other people would think.

Lucky for me, I know my place in this school, and I know when to keep my mouth shut about trivial things. If they found out I had taken the time to go out of my way and give them a name, they would never let me live it down.

Hey, Kendall. One of them, Cassie, murmured. She looked at me with her big, stupid blue eyes when I glanced down at her.

What do you want? I asked, rolling my eyes.

I just wanted to know why you lied, she said, tossing her long hair over her shoulder.

I pinched the bridge of my nose and sighed. What are you talking about?

The second Imposter, Veronica, glared at me and said, You said you don’t have anything to hide. Everyone heard you.

Why do you care? I snapped. It’s not like you said anything. What did you write?

Claire, the final of the group, looked at me with a hard gaze. Everyone has things to hide, you’re no different. So tell us what your secret is.

It’s none of your business, I said, grabbing my books. You guys really need to find another hobby, I think. Picking on people really is in poor taste.

Hearing them gasp and whisper to each other as I turned away from them was satisfaction to my ears. As the bell rang, signaling the end of class, I left them with what I could only imagine to be the most offended faces ever.

I can’t let anyone know what I wake up screaming about at night. I can’t let the head bitch know I’ve dreamed about gutting her for months too, can I?

    Chapter 4

Istepped into the crowded hallway, and while being pushed and shoulder-slammed, someone touched my arm. I had half a mind to wheel around and hit whoever it was, but then I saw a pair of hazel eyes blinking at me.

Christian grinned and swept the dark hair out of his eyes. His touch was warm against my skin as he pulled me away from the people and waited for them to pass before turning to me. His hand fluttered against my cheek slowly.

"You looked like you were going to get
