Chapter One
Levi winced as he dabbed his bloodied lip. It felt double, if not triple the size it should have been, but when he looked in the mirror in the car, it didn’t seem so bad. More a neat slice than the swollen lump it felt like. His black hair was in disarray, he had a graze on his cheek, and one of his eyes was still watering.
He could’ve handled it at home, or checked into a hospital further out, then made a phone call to his boss, but no, instead, he turned up at his house.
He moved his gaze to the house in front of him. His boss’s house, or more accurately his boss’s mansion. The gate had closed behind him, locking Levi inside, no escape. He knew the code, hadn’t needed to interrupt his boss, but once he’d silenced the engine, his nervousness began to grow.
Not only was Levi feeling apprehensive over telling the boss of his awful night, but he didn’t know quite what he was about to walk into. The car he’d parked next to was Hamish’s, and Levi knew he and Benny would be inside, too.
The lights were on. Through a crack in his window Levi could hear the thump of music and knew his boss had company. He wouldn’t be expecting Levi to turn up, bloodied, defeated, with an empty seat beside him.
Levi released a long sigh, closed his eyes, then climbed out of the car.
He staggered towards the door, glancing guiltily at the cameras. He heard a chain clunk, and Hades appeared. The Doberman didn’t pull back his top lick and stiffen in a threatening manner. No, he rushed out of his dog kennel, wagging his stump of a tail. Levi kneeled, wincing at the ache in his ribs and the throb in his shoulders. He petted Hades and allowed the dog to lick the blood off his forehead.
Hey, buddy.
Hades’s nose wrinkled. Then he snorted right in Levi’s face, adding to his filthiness, but he couldn’t be mad at Hades. Not when he greeted him so excitedly.
Levi got to his feet, searched in his pocket for a dog biscuit, then chucked it to Hades. He found the key to the boss’s place, and after three unsuccessful attempts, he finally got it in the lock.
He opened the door, and stepped into the lion’s den, so called because it was the first thing guests saw when walking into the house. A huge male lion, full size, made of bronze, was in the center of the massive entrance hall. He was snarling, eyes on the front door, a not so subtle reminder that once you were inside, you answered only to the boss. Your loyalty was only to him. Levi flashed a look at the bottom of the statue, the skulls the lion stood on top of, those that had forgotten the house rules.
The house screamed expense, from the marble floors to the gold stairs. The boss liked to flaunt his wealth, amazing anyone who walked through his doors. It was an incentive to work for him—work for him, and get a small cut of his fortune—but some people also saw it as a challenge. Take out the boss, and you’ll get his wealth, you’ll get his riches. Levi had killed men that had tried, gazelles
the boss called them.
Levi gulped, tasting metal, and followed the sound of the music.
The boss was being entertained in the basement, the red room they nicknamed it, and Levi made his way down the steps. What he was about to see was going to hurt more than his stinging lip, or the deep ache in his arm, or his ribs, and shoulders.
An uneasy feeling flooded his stomach, and his heart pounded even faster than the racing beat of the music. He gripped onto the banister to steady himself—or to hold himself up, he wasn’t entirely sure which—and paused in the doorway at the bottom.
The circular room had a dancing pole in the middle, and a lingerie-clad woman was spinning, dangling, flicking her hair back, and generally looking sexy as hell. The room screamed out sex. The walls were draped in thick, red velvet, and the speakers were hidden behind.
The lights were low, and a huge glitterball hung from the ceiling, sparkling
