A strange big creature falls frozen from the space in the California desert in front of two people, then it breaks out of the ice. It does not seem hurt, and when they shoot at it, the bullets just bounce off. The giant thing crushes them and makes its way to somewhere.

A few months later in Los Angeles, two men take the law into their hands by stopping or killing criminals - they come out of nowhere, strike swiftly and return to nowhere. Their actions have good and bad consequences, and the police and the press are all over this.

Melanie Rivers is a good, but short-tempered girl who sometimes gets into trouble because of that. John Barnes is a criminal who wants to start a new legal life, after he is almost killed. The later events bring them both together, along with a few others, but some of these events get them close and even closer to the dangerous vigilantes.

With the danger growing, many unknown and secret things are revealed - things that would have been better left in the dark. Eventually, it all leads to the mystery around the strange creature...
