    Chapter Eleven

Stride didn’t hesitate. He closed his eyes and instantly he was there in front of the tent. The rain poured down on him, soaking his long black hair, plastering it and his thin shirt to his skin. The anaconda was over twenty-five feet long and he estimated a weight of about five hundred pounds. He reached out for the snake and clutched it around the throat.

The snake slithered and squirmed in his fist, its eyes flashing fire on top of its head. "Command me, my Lord." A forked tongue slid out of its mouth and attempted to lick Stride’s face. "You are some beautiful demon, my Lord. Do you wish my life?"

Stride ducked back away from the tongue just in time to avoid its slimy kiss. He reached up to brush some hair out of his face. He squeezed his fist, feeling the life in the snake begin to wane. I know what you want! You won’t take my child.

"We can raise him to be what he was meant to be. Giving him that name will not save him from his fate. My Lord, you have enemies. You are shaking the foundations of Hell. We want your son…and we want you out!"

Stride’s fist tightened and he tore the snake’s head from its body. It flopped to the muddy ground and lay silent. Stride sneered down at the lifeless form. You’ll never get my son. You’ll have to rip my heart from my chest first.

Zero stood, breathless, at the opening of the tent. He’d sensed something—something evil. He’d lain the baby down and gone to peek out of the tent flap. When he’d spotted the snake, he’d been prepared to defend the baby with his life but then… Then he’d stood spellbound as the most beautiful man he’d ever seen had appeared a few feet away.

The man was tall and muscular. His long hair was plastered to his head, his clothing soaked through, revealing every succulent inch of his hard, muscled torso.

Tears blurred his eyes. Zero had seen this man before. His heart knew him intimately, had pressed his lips to that sweet flesh. Stride. He’d picked up the snake as if it were some kind of stuffed toy. His eyes… His eyes had turned blood red. It had made Zero take a step back. He’d seen vampire eyes glow red before—he could do it himself when his emotions were aroused—but this was…something quite different. As Stride shook the snake, his entire face changed. He shifted from a beautiful, seemingly human male to some kind of a monster. The image lasted only a few seconds—the distortion faded in and out as if Stride was trying to cast it off. His skin looked almost scaly, the sharp teeth elongated, and even the cheek bones and nose shifted to something quite grotesque.

    The downpour was now a
