LADY Portia Fanning waited eagerly for her proposed visitors.

But Lady Portia, of course, was a paragon of virtue – at least outwardly.

Her husband, Sir Godfrey Lang, was, as usual, down in London on Foreign Office duty. He was 71 and had spent his career as a civil servant – or a mandarin as the British press referred to the career bureaucrats. Since retiring, however, Godfrey had been busier than ever. He had been hired as a consultant by foreign governments. And lately, the Foreign Office had asked him to train some younger personnel. So his time was spent in London, while Lady Portia spent most of the week in her constituency, serving the needs of the people, and perhaps a day or two in London on Parliamentary duties. They had three children and five grandchildren, who they saw every weekend.

Life was generally very good for Lady Portia, and now, as she glanced at the clock, she knew it was about to get a whole lot better.

The boys who would be keeping her company that afternoon would arrive soon.

They were village lads, both delicious hunks, both eighteen.

Will was the son of Sergeant Cranworth. The boy was dark-haired and tall, madly handsome and a rugby player for the local college.

Eddie was the butcher’s son. A blonde boy who was a bit rough around the edges, but Lady Portia liked a bit of rough.

She had come across them that morning while strolling down to the village to get the papers.

‘Good morning, boys,’ she had purred, leaning provocatively out of the car.

Meeting Will and Eddie that morning had left her quite dizzy.

‘I’ll be waiting for you,’ she cooed to the boys. ‘And I’ll be very enthusiastic.’
