    # Side Hustle | An Entrepreneur’s Guide to Building Passive Income From Unexpected Ideas - James Bradley

    Introduction

GETTING AHEAD IN LIFE financially seems like a bore. Head to work, slave away hours so you can cover rent and bills and hope there’s enough money left over for a half-decent meal along the way. When you’re caught in the daily grind of a job you don’t love, it can seem impossible to ever make enough money. If you don’t love your job, then working overtime to make a little extra money isn’t very appealing. It’s the type of cycle that just makes you want to throw up your hands in frustration. Indeed, many people have.

But this general frustration about earning money the traditional way has led to a surge of clever entrepreneurs launching their own companies. What many people hit on is the multitude of unique ways that exist to make money. While you got to keep working your day job to pay those bills, people have been finding ways to make a little money by hustling on the side and many find such joy and such success with their side hustle that they turn it into a full-time living.

But the best news of all is that many of the side hustles that people find are enjoyable. A lot start out as hobbies which people turn into money-making opportunities. A particular favorite of mine is publishing books but people have turned their interest in photography, painting, sketching, sewing and even crocheting into a support income. Imagine making money doing something that you love. Now stop imagining because it is entirely possible to make that your reality these days.

You might be thinking, Hey, that sounds great and all, but I don’t have any time. Well, there are many side hustles that earn a passive income. While you still have to do a few hours of work every week or two, a passive income is money that you don’t have to work to earn. If you can find an hour or two every week, you can learn, set up and profit from a business that builds income passively. Imagine making money while you're sleeping. It’s entirely possible and one of the many ways that people have found of earning a living from their side hustle.

It doesn’t matter if all you have is $1, there is a world of possibilities out there from which you can make money. This book aims to show you as many as it can. Though I won’t lie, I’ll also be focusing a little on my favorite: publishing. But just one chapter, I promise. My goal in writing this book is to show you that there are more options for earning an income than you could ever imagine. Not only that, but I hope to show you that turning a side hustle into a revenue stream is something anyone can do.

In chapter one, we’ll look at the side hustle itself. Consider this your wake-up call. We’ll look at examples of people who turned a side hustle into a full-time job and we’ll discuss how we bring value to our customers. More than that, we’ll also tackle the most important part of starting a side hustle: your mindset. If you want to succeed, it is all about mindset.

In chapter two, we’ll speak about finding a niche and how one goes about that. This chapter will identify one of the key ways that we bring value to our customer’s lives. Not only will you bring more value to our customers with this knowledge, but you’ll also be able to use this knowledge to tap into lucrative markets. In chapter three, you’ll see an absolute ton of ideas for side hustles. Each hustle that we look at in this chapter has been used by someone to make money, which means that you can too, if it catches your interest.

In chapter four we’ll cover everything you need to take your side hustle from idea to income. We’ll talk about raising capital to go from your very first $1 to growing your capital from there. Chapter five will introduce the $2,000 golden ticket, that number at which your capital will open many doors, let you scale up your earnings and achieve an income of $10,000 a month. Chapter six will cover my favorite way of earning income, publishing. I did say there would be one chapter on it, after all.

Since we’ll be talking a lot of business and specifics on how to tackle these side hustle goals, chapter seven returns to the idea of mindset. It’s important to remember that when you are building up a side hustle and looking to expand that there is no failure. Every step along the way is a lesson to be learned. Mistakes and missteps are necessary to show you the places you still need to learn. If you tackle this with the right mindset, nothing can stop you from earning as much as you want.

So, what are you waiting for? Let’s start hustling.

Chapter One: The Digital American Dream

IF YOU WANT TO BEGIN hustling, then it is best to get a solid idea of what a side hustle is and why you would want one in the first place. Understanding the benefits of a side hustle will help to see it as that much more achievable and worthwhile. I say worthwhile because, as you will learn, a side hustle is not always easy. But many people have come before you and made successful careers out of their side hustle. In fact, you might be truly surprised at the humble, side hustle origins of some major, major companies.

With a definition of a side hustle and some truly inspiring stories, we’ll then look at just how important a good idea is. Idea and thoughts are the core of what makes a side hustle into a success or a failure. This doesn’t just mean the ideas of what you are selling. We are also talking about the way we think about ourselves and our role in taking $1 and turning it to $10,000 per month. To that end, we’re going to talk about mindset and how you can set yourself up for success when you put your mind to it.

    What is a Side Hustle?

The side hustle has been around for as long as humans have been stuck working jobs they don’t love. There are stories, and many of them, about peasants in medieval England earning some money on the side by brewing their own spirits. The peasants would go out and work the fields as they were required but they’d come home and earn their money on the drink they made. That money would go towards new clothes and bigger, heartier meals for them and their families. Sure, the lord of their land owned the fields and they owed him their work. But the drink? The drink was all for them.

Tons and tons have changed since those days but in a way, nothing has really changed. We’re conditioned to work a 9 to 5 job, earning a living to bring other people’s dreams to life. They are the lords and we are the peasants that are striving to earn a living. But one of the things that has changed drastically is our ability to work a side hustle. That peasant brewing the spirits would get in a lot of trouble if he was caught. But we’re allowed to work as many jobs as we want. More and more people have been finding themselves tired of this old-school system and so more and more people are turning into entrepreneurs to take a side hustle and turn it into a money-making machine. Speaking of machines, there’s a new one that is making side hustling into a major movement.

The internet has brought us together. We are now able to talk to people all across the world and share our interests. Now, young entrepreneurs aren’t just looking at the viability of their business idea based on where they live. Because of the digital revolution, your business can now serve a national or even international client base. This means that where side hustles of the past would make money off a handful of local neighbors, now you have the ability to tap into millions of potential customers. The digital revolution has paved the way for entrepreneurs to connect with customers unlike anything history has ever seen before.

But not only are there more customers than ever before, there are more niches. We’ll talk about these in-depth next chapter, niches are specific products and services. Do you sell old printers? Cool, there’s a niche for that. Like sketching people’s portraits? You better believe there is a niche there. Do you find old VHS and sell them on eBay? Also a niche. Do you tear old advertisements out of magazines and sell the loose pages to people online? Yeah, even that is a niche. There’s a ton of them. Why are there so many? Because there are so many customers. We live at a point in time when everyone can speak to each other and many are saying, Hey, I also like this thing. These interests bring people together and they are also a great way to make money with a side hustle. Now remember though, the key to any business is to bring value to your customers. We’ll cover that in more depth shortly but one of the ways to bring value is through niches.

The digital revolution brought a ton of customers together and those customers create niches. This means there are tons of people and tons of interesting ways to provide them value. But there’s still one key piece of the side hustle puzzle that is missing: the means of production. Thankfully, the internet has given us these tools as well. There are a ton of websites that we’ll be covering later in the book that have been made with one purpose in mind: helping you reach customers and make products. It is easier than ever to make merchandise. Shirts, cups, journals, books. There are sites that let you make and sell all of these. But there are other sites that let you sell the stuff you make yourself. There are also resources like Amazon’s Marketplace or eBay, which let you sell items second-hand. The internet opened the marketplace up and handed over the tools necessary for anyone to make a $10,000 per month income if they’re willing to hustle a little.

How about a bit of proof to back up that statement? Let’s look at a few of the companies that began as side hustles.

From Side Hustle to Massive Money

There are an absolute ton of side hustles that have grown into full-time jobs. But even more impressive than that, there are a bunch of side hustles that have turned into multi-million-dollar empires. Some of these companies are so large that it is almost impossible to think of them as something other than massive entities. But each and every one of these companies were once just an idea that someone had for a side hustle.

One such company is Etsy, a name that will undoubtedly show up with some regularity throughout this book. Etsy is a website that lets people sell their handmade goods. It’s basically an arts and crafts fair that’s stocked with new goods 24/7. When Etsy started way back in 2005, it was a small marketplace with only a handful of people using it to sell their goods. But even though there was only a handful of product producers, there were tons of customers. It turns out that people love handmade and home-crafted goods, the labor that went into producing them and their unique status of one-of-a-kind made them sell like crazy. Within a couple of years of launching, Etsy was making millions of dollars in sales each year. By 2016, just eleven years after launching, Etsy had an IPO of $100 million. Etsy began as a way to sell crafts and grew from something offering the products of a handful of people and is now a platform that more than a million people have used to sell their goods.

Another major company that began as a side hustle is Instagram. Chances are you have an account of your own, so I don’t need to tell you how wildly popular this social media platform is. But if you didn’t know, this photo-sharing website boasts a billion users from all around the world. But it wasn’t always that big. Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger created Instagram back in 2010, though at that point their company was called Burbn. Burbn was launched from a desk they rented in a shared office on evenings and weekends. Meanwhile, both Systrom and Kreiger had day jobs to stay on top of. Burbn didn’t really get anywhere. That is, until they changed their
