    Jonathan Vase - Jonathan Vase

    Prologue

Elena, we can’t help you if you don’t tell us what is wrong. All the doctors here are for your benefit. Dr. Rainsford said in the falsely sympathetic voice he probably used with all his patients.

He was an aged man, maybe late fifties, who was balding with gray emerging in his greasy brown hair, glasses oval and spotless. His white lab coat was free of wrinkles with pens and his doctor’s badge clipped and secured in its pockets.

Milia, Elena’s dearest mother, placed a comforting hand on her young daughter’s shoulder as she places the other in her short black hair in an attempt to encourage her silent child to voice her issue to the doctors in the room. Elena stared, blue eyes empty and lost as she pondered whether or not it would be safe to speak. Her chapped lips set in a thin line starring into the doctor’s eyes. He stares back; she blinks. She chose not.

Is there no one this child will speak to? The tired man asked her mother. Elena looked at the door expectantly, knowing. Milia’s eyes watered in concern for her daughter as she nodded her head. Even she and her husband knew nothing of their daughter’s problems. All they knew was that she had gone mute silent since her fifth birthday and the only sound to emerge from her were screams of terror in her sleep.

H-her brother, Dmitri; I know that she tells him everything, Milia explained as she squeezed her five-year-old’s shoulder before releasing it to get the aforementioned boy, leaving the room with the doctor.

Elena watched as the door shut. The room turned cold as she turned her head to look at the large mirror and many toys scattered everywhere along with little tables. The door opened, she gave a faint smile.

Are you okay Elena? Dmitri asked. The boy was five years older than his sister. Though if one did not know that, they would assume the two were twins.

Elena nodded her head slowly as she watched Dmitri take a seat across from her. His face looked uneasy and anxious.

Are you still scared about the dream Ela?

She nods again, only this time her eyes begin to water.

He can’t hurt you, he hasn’t hurt you, Ela. It’s all just thoughts and nothing more. Dmitri said as he reached over the table to grab his sister’s hand from her lap and bring it to the tabletop, holding it firmly.

B-but Dmitri he promised! I fall d-down the hole and h-he's always there! He catches me a-and he p-promises! Elena sobbed loudly as she jumped from her metal seat to run into her brother’s arms. Embracing his crying sister, he rubs her back softly. Milia watches distressed as she attempts to reenter the room where her children are but is held back by the doctor.

We need to see just a little more to be sure what the right treatment is. Rainsford declares as he looks back through the window.

Elena, what did he promise? Dmitri asks solemnly as his sister quakes and sobs into his chest, grasping his shirt as an anchor.

T-that I’m going to die and s-stay with h-h-him forever! Elena cried out as she hugged her brother for dear life. Ever since she began having nightmares, she always told him about them. He always listened, not like how her mother and
