He’s the only man I’ve ever wanted
He’s my superhero.
Tall, dark, and handsome, Damon Case has it all: wealth, power, a mysterious past, and the body of a God.
He protects the town, and he’s protected me, forcing my awful parents to stop hurting me.
I don’t care how checkered his past is. I have to have him.
He tells me I’m too good for him.
But without him, I’m lost; he’s the only man who can make me feel safe.
Now suddenly, criminals have come to our small town, and I’m one of their targets.
And here comes Damon to my rescue again.
I finally get my one night in his arms, but dawn brings a terrible revelation.
One of the boys who attacked me has been shot dead, and Damon’s the prime suspect.
Damon swore he would never kill again...
But if he didn’t pull the trigger, who did?
Damon: Sweet little Amy’s all grown up now, and she tempts me every time I see her...
She was the little girl I took home when she got left behind at the market and the teenager I helped when her parents locked her out.
Now, she’s grown into the most amazing, sweet, sexy woman I have ever met.
I can’t find satisfaction with any other woman in bed unless I think of Amy—angel-faced Amy who thinks I’m a hero.
When a leg injury sends her home from college for a semester, she’s back in my territory.
She’s more beautiful, sweet, and understanding than ever.
I shouldn’t stain her with my bloody hands...but God, do I want to.
Now some of the boys in my town have gone bad, and they’ve targeted my Amy.
I’ll do anything to protect her—except kill again. I promised.
But the very night I finally have her in my arms, one of the boys turns up murdered.
She thinks I did it. And now she’s fled.
That hot little gem of a girl loves me in spite of my past...
I’ve got to clear my name for her no matter what it takes.

Chapter 1
Amy
My blood burns with frustration as I run. My running shoes slap the sidewalk beneath me with every step. I’m just not getting better fast enough. I’m not even back to half my normal speed, and I can feel the ache in my underused muscles after only a few blocks.
I don’t want to overdo exercising. My physical therapist, Mike, has already warned me about what can happen if I do. I have only had the cast off for a few weeks; I should only be doing this at a walking pace, just like I do after breakfast every day.
But right now I am so pissed off at Mom and Dad that I have to burn off my anger somehow before I go back home.
"Amy, I know you’re still healing, but you need to go back to the dorms as soon as summer is over. Your dad and I like the peace and quiet, honey. We’re paying for you to live on campus as much for our convenience as yours.
You’re twenty. You can’t expect us to put you up forever.
Bitch. The thought makes me feel a little guilty. It’s not that I don’t understand where Mom is coming from—the two-bedroom bungalow where I grew up just isn’t big enough for three adults.
But I’m sick to death of being reminded over and over again of what a sacrifice they’re making by taking me in. I’m their daughter and I’ve been injured. It’s not like I’m some random moocher off the street. They’ve never been the best at parenting, but Mom’s really being selfish about this.
I manage to make it to the top of the first hill before stopping to rest my leg and catch my breath. How many months of training have I lost thanks to that stupid kid, his stupid inattentive parents, and that stupid tree well? It was a skiing accident, Mom, not a bid to inconvenience you.
She’d actually had the nerve to shed a few tears when I said it. And then she turned around and went right back to acting like my shattered leg was exactly that—an inconvenience.
I’d be less pissed about Mom and Dad wanting to get rid of me if they would just be fair about it. I hadn’t asked for some unattended little boy to blunder suddenly into my path in the middle of a damn black diamond slope. I definitely hadn’t asked to be sent veering into a tree to avoid him.
I was both really lucky and really unlucky in those desperate seconds after dodging the kid. I’d slowed down enough on that steep slope to keep from killing myself, but then the snow at the foot of a tree crumbled under me, and I dropped into darkness. I don’t remember a damn thing after that until I woke up in the hospital.
My shattered leg cost me an entire semester of school. I spent all spring moping around in a cast between sessions with Mike and arguments with my parents; I’m eager to get back to Denver. But on that day when I was wheeled out of the hospital, the last thing I needed was grief about having to depend on Mom and Dad for a while.
But that doesn’t matter to them. My mother’s just being honest
nagging started right after I told her that Dr. Lenz hadn’t cleared me to return to school for the summer semester. She was really mad about that—mad at me.
I asked her what she expected me to do, and she waved her arms and went on about how she didn’t know; she was just expressing her feelings. Meanwhile Dad, as quietly remote as Mom is dramatic, hid behind his newspaper. Yet I have no doubt that he’s the one that will change the locks as soon as my car pulls away from the curb.
After Mom’s stupid lecture, I had to leave for a while. And this first attempt at a beloved night run is helping my blood cool down.
The town of Jagged Butte is small and sleepy enough that most of the time, night runs aren’t a problem so long as the weather allows them. The crime rate is so low that we have only one guy handling local law enforcement, and he’s a county deputy, not a full sheriff—but for a population of five thousand, it’s surprisingly enough.
My hometown sprawls across the broken-looking top of the butte whose name it bears, high up enough that you need strong lungs to live here. Everything branches off of a single main street that meanders up from the interstate and runs from hill to hill. There’s one school complex, one library, two food stores, one clinic, one movie theater, a few other shops, and five bed and breakfasts to accommodate the winter skiers and summer hikers.
People here are divided into two types: the ones with real money and land who live back in the woods, and the rest of us who live and work in town. Some folks come in from the surrounding villages and hamlets to swell the population during the day, and of course, there are the tourists. But mostly it’s us—the Townies—who populate the town with occasional visits from our rich, aloof neighbors when they need to stock up on supplies.
As I jog along, I have a better view of the big houses scattered through the hills than during the day; their twinkling lights give them away from behind their screen of trees. Some of those estates cover more land than the town itself. Others are no more than a nice house and yard on half an acre of space. And then there’s Damon’s Tower.
I look up at the mountainside
